  • Notes
    • Otto's surname history is tortured. His father Orris was born as a "Snouffer" and was a member of the Ohio Snouffer clan. But his father Orris changed his surname to "Schnauffer," which was the original spelling when the family came to the U.S. in 1751. To confound matters, Otto later changed his own surname to the spelling "Snoffer."

The 1900 census lists Otto's father Orris S. "Schnauffer" and his family living in Portland, OR. Orris was born in March 1867 in Ohio; his father in Pennsylvania [sic], and his mother in West Virginia. Orris was 33 years old, a music teacher, and he is shown as married to his second wife "Elta H," 33, a physician. She was born in Aug. 1866 in Iowa; both of her parents were born in Indiana. Living with them was a son, Otto S, 6, born in March 1894 in Nebraska to parents who were both born in Ohio [sic]. 1900 U.S. Census, Portland, Ward 10, Multnomah Cnty, OR (T 623, Roll 1351, stamped p. 18).

      The 1904 Portland City Directory, p. 824 (R. L. Polk & Co.; 1904), provides the following:
"Schnauffer Mrs Elta H, phys 271 1/2 Russell, res 424 Williams av.
"Schnauffer Orris S, music tchr, res 424 Williams av."

The 1910 census lists Otto's father "Oris" S. Schnauffer, 43, married 17 years to his wife "Elta," also 43. This census records that "Oris" was born in Ohio, his father in Maryland and his mother in Virginia. It records that "Elta" was born in Iowa, her father in Kentucky and her mother in Indiana. This census is consistent as to occupations: Orris is listed as a music teacher and Elta as a physician. The census does indicate that she was the mother of one child who was still living. A son, Otto, 16, lived with them. He is recorded as born in Nebraska, his father in Ohio and his mother in Iowa. He was employed as a newspaper "agent." 1910 U.S. Census, Portland, Ward 9, Multnomah Cnty, OR (T 624, Roll 1289, stamped p. 219B).

The 1912 Portland City Directory gives the same information as the 1904 Directory. In 1915 the information was a bit different:
"Schnauffer Elta H Mrs phys 424 Williams av h same
      "Orris S (Elta H) musician h 424 Williams av
      "Otto S musician r 424 Williams av."
1915 Portland City Directory, p. 1067 (R.L. Polk & Co.: 1915). The 1917 Directory, p. 1020, and the 1918 Directory, p. 1110, both list the three Schnauffers living in the same home with the same occupations. The 1920 Directory makes no mention of the Schnauffers. And the 1921, 1923 and 1924 Directories all mention just Orris and Elta but do not mention Otto; one may infer that their son Otto had moved out of Portland. The 1925, 1926, 1927, and 1928 Directories make no mention of any Schnauffers.

Otto's World War I Draft Registration Card, dated 5 Jun 1917, stated that he was tall and slender, had blue eyes, and had "light" colored hair but was partly bald. It said also that he was born 9 Mar 1894 in Lincoln, NE, and that he was then employed as a musician at the Majestic Theatre in Portland, OR.

The 1920 census lists Otto's father "Orris S Schnauffer," 52, living with his wife Elta, 50, and son Otto S, 24; they resided on Williams Ave. in Portland. Otto was employed as a musician with a "traveling show." 1920 U.S. Census, Prct 240, Portland, Multnomah Cnty, OR (T 625, Roll 1502, stamped p. 97).

By 1930 Otto and his father had moved to California. "Otto S. Snoffer," is listed as a 36 year old man, married at 29 but divorced, and working as a "Water & Light Co." inspector. Living with him was his widowed father "Orris S Schnauffer," 63, who still worked as a music teacher. 1930 U.S. Census, Assem. Dist. 55, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Cnty, CA (T 626, Roll 133, stamped p. 66).

Otto Sherwood Schnauffer was issued a Certificate of Delayed Birth Registration, Certificate # 2-208876, by the State of Nebraska on 3 Jun 1960. It states that he was born 9 Mar 1894 in Lincoln, Lancaster Cnty, NE; and that his parents were Orris Sherman Schnauffer, born in Ohio in 1867, and Cecelia May Paddock, also born in Ohio in 1867.

The delayed birth certificate recites that Otto enlisted in the U.S. Army on 14 Sep 1918 in Portland, OR, and that he was honorably discharged on 11 Dec 1918 at Camp Eustice, VA.

Otto's death is recorded in the California Death Index (under the surname Snoffer), but his name does not appear in the Social Security Death Index.
