  • Notes
    • The 1860 census lists John as a 14 year old boy, born in Ohio, living with his parents, John and Julia Ann Snouffer, siblings, and grandmother "Maria Snouffer." 1860 U.S. Census, Worthington P.O., Perry Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (M 653, Roll 962, stamped p. 307).

In 1870 "Snoffer, John" was listed as a 24-yr old "Farm Laborer," born in Ohio, and living with his wife "Louisa," 23, and 2 month old baby daughter "Georgiana." The census also listed the two as living adjacent to his parents John and Julia "Snoffer." 1870 U.S. Census, Perry twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (M 593, Roll 1200, stamped p. 679).

The 1880 census shows that the family has grown: John "Snaffer" is listed as a 34 yr old farmer, born in Ohio (and whose parents were born in Maryland), living with his wife "Lavina", 33, and 5 daughters: Glendora, 10; Augusta, 8; Ella, 6; Daisy, 4; and Louisa, 1. The family lived 2 houses away from John's parents. 1880 U.S. Census, Perry twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 9, Roll 1015, stamped p. 171).

According to the Franklin Cnty, OH, Probate Court Administration Docket 11:319 (3 Nov 1888), John H's father John died 21 Oct 1888. His will may be found in Franklin Cnty Will Record L:315. It bequeathed all real and personal property to his wife Julia A. Snouffer, and upon her death, the real estate was to be divided among their children, as follows: to daughters "Ellen L. Pinney and Margaret K. Skeels," a 43a. parcel; to daughter "Clevis Sylvania Snouffer," a 10.07a. tract, and to son "John H. Snouffer," a 20.66a. tract. Another lot was to be sold and proceeds divided among the three daughters.

The 1900 census shows John "Snoffer," a 54 year old farmer, born in June, 1846, living with his wife "Lavina," 53, born in March, 1847, and daughter Louise, 21, born in November 1878. 1900 U.S. Census, Sharon Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 623, Roll 1270, stamped p. 258A).

The 1910 census lists John H. as a 64-yr old widower, with his "own income," living with his daughter and son-in-law Julia A. and William O. Huff, and their children. 1910 U.S. Census, Sharon Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 624, Roll 1183, stamped p. 277).

According to a 1935 Ohio newspaper article celebrating his 89th birthday, John was a corporal in Company E, 133d Ohio regiment, Ohio National Guard. "He enlisted in 1864 when he was 18. Going to Camp Chase, the soldiers petitioned to be allowed to join the regular army. He saw active fighting between Richmond and Petersburg, Va.... An honorable discharge certificate signed by Abraham Lincoln is his most prized possession." John was mustered into the Army on 5 May 1864, and mustered out on 29 Aug, 1864. See Ohio General Assembly, Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861 - 1866, vol. 1, p. 592 (The Werner Co., Akron, OH : 1893).

See also www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm (citing National Archives film 552, roll 101)(accessed Jan 2006). His cousins John B. and George N. Snouffer also were members of Company E, along with his uncle David Snouffer. In History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio, p. 152 (Williams Bros. Printers : 1880), John H. is listed as a Corporal in Company E; his uncle David is listed as a "musician."
