    • The 1900 census records his parents' family as James and Marie Hastings: James Hastings, 47, born Mar 1853 in IL, living with his wife of 21 years; Marie A, 48, born May 1852 in IL; and the following Illinois-born children: Hugh H, 17, b. Jun 1882; Myrtle E, 16, b. Nov 1883; Ella M, 14, b. May 1886; Mary E, 12, b. Oct 1887; Anna E, 11, b. Feb 1889; William H, 8, b. Nov 1891. Also in the home were James' sister Isabella Hastings, 51, b. Apr 1849; and a "boarder," John Kerr, 40, b. Jan 1860 in Ireland, who was a farm laborer. 1900 U.S. Census, LaPrairie Twsp, Marshall Cnty, IL (T623, Roll 328, stamped p. 133).
    • The 1910 census lists his parents, James Hastings, 57, and Marie A, 57, and their children: Hugh H, 27; Myrtle E, 26; Ella M, 23; Mary E, 22; Anna E, 21; and W. Henry, 18, together with James' sister "Isabel," 61. All had been born in Illinois. James was a farmer. Hugh also was a farmer. Myrtle, Ella and Anna were school teachers. 1910 U.S. Census, LaPraire Twsp, Marshall Cnty, IL (T 624, Roll 311, stamped p. 123).
    • William's WW I draft card (5 Jun 1917) gives his full name as "William Henry Hastings," 25, born 5 Nov 1891 in LaPrairie Twsp, Marshall Cnty, IL. He was single, living in Sparland, IL and was a theological student, "employed" in Pittsburg, PA.
    • His parents' obituaries in 1928 & 1929 indicated that he was a "Rev." in St. Louis, MO.
