    • There is, in the 1860 census, a "Charles Armstrong," 18, born in Ohio, a "day lab[orer]" living in Worthington, OH. He lived in the houshold of "Absolom Walcutt," his wife and child, as well as another lodger. 1860 U.S. Census, Perry Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (M 653, stamped p. 156-B, line 22) [LDS Fillm 803962, Image 22].
    • Franklin Cnty OH Marriage Records note that on 13 May 1861 Charles H. Armstrong and Ellen L. Snouffer were granted a license to marry. In the affidavit supporting the license, Charles swore that he was 21 years old and Ellen swore that she was 18. [LDS Film 4254794; Record 633; Image 362 of 448] However, a few days later, when they married on 19 May 1861, Charles corrected his affidavit to state that he was 19 years old. [LDS Film 5254794; Record 637; Image 363 of 448].
    • Civil War pension records contain a copy of the Marriage Certificate for Charles H. Armstrong and Ellen L. Snouffer issued 19 May 1861 by the Probate Court of Franklin Cnty, OH. See:
    • A U.S. Civil War soldier records database notes that Charles H. Armstrong enlisted in Ohio in Oct 1861. He enlisted in Co. C, Ohio 46th Infantry Regiment on 16 Oct 1861. He was mustered out on 3 Oct 1862 at Memphis, TN.
    • Civil War pension records show that Charles Armstrong died during the war on 3 Oct 1862. He died at Fort Pickering, Memphis, TN, from typhoid fever. He left a surviving wife, Ellen, and minor child, William Eyerman Armstrong.
    • It is unlikely that Charles was buried in the Mound City National Cemetery, located about 4 miles North of Cairo, because it was not established until 1864.
    • Regarding his burial, the pension records contain this hand-written letter:
      "Columbus Ohio Oct 7th 1862
      "Mr. J. Snoffer [sic; John Snouffer was Charles' father-in-law]
      "Dear Sir
      "It is with a sorrowful heart that I have to announce to you and Family the death of Charles Armstrong [.] he was taken down with the fever Sept 25th and died 8 oclock Friday Morning Oct 3rd.
      "Lieut Linnville and myself procured a Metalic Coffin for the purpose of bringing him home[.] I started in charge of him Friday evening arrive[d] at Cairo Ill. Sunday 12 A.M. Could not get on a train until Monday morning. by that time the Corpse had become so offensive that they refused to take him on the train.
      "Consequently there was no alternative for me but to have him intered [sic] which I did in the graveyard west of Cairo. (one mile).
      "I procured a head bord [sic] and had it Marked with this inscription. (Charles Armstrong Co. C 46th Regt O.V.I.) [Ohio Volunteer Infantry]

      "Yours in Friendship
      "A. B. Melick" [Sgt. Alfred B. Melick, of the same Regiment]
