  • Notes
    • The 1910 census report on Steve's family is difficult to decipher because the ink is so faint. It lists Steve as "S--?- M," 10 years old, living with his parents and siblings. 1910 U.S. Census, Sharon twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 624, Roll 1183, stamped p. 276).

At the time of his WW I draft registration in 1918, Stephen listed his occupation as an automobile mechanic working for the Worthington Garage Co.

Opha Moore, HISTORY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, OHIO, v. 3, pp. 1303-04 (Historical Pub. Co., 1930), states:
"Stanley W. Snouffer [Stephen's father] ... was a farmer and also followed the carpenter's trade.... *** [Two of his sons were] Stephen M., and Leslie R., who are engaged in the automobile business at Worthington [as partners with their brother Raymond, who was] agent for the DeSoto and Chevrolet automobiles. They are also exclusive dealers at Worthington for Firestone tires and tubes and have an up to date service station and repair shop."

For a photo of the auto business mentioned, see "My Worthington Memories" at http://www.worthingtonmemory.org/WorthingtonMemoryExpandedRecord.cfm?ID=1499&tn=1 (accessed Feb 2009).

John I. Snouffer reported that Steve was the head Postmaster in Worthington for a while. (Email to Wm.C.Snouffer, 7 Nov 2002)

The Walnut Grove Cemetery comments provide: "Preceded in death by wife Emma. Survived by daughters Janice (James) West, Tucson, Ariz., Donna (David) Chamberlin, San Diego, Calif.; son Harlan Snouffer, Worthington, Oh.; 7 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; brothers Elmer, Raymond, & Paul Snouffer." • Worthington [OH] News (10 Jul 2014):
"Snouffer's Roots are Deep in Worthington"
      By Candy Brooks
In this article about his half-brother Paul, and his father Stanley, Ms. Brooks wrote:
"Stanley had four boys from his first marriage [to Verna Hard], which ended with his wife's death while they were living in the big farmhouse that still stands on the rear of Whieldon Lane. He later married Mertie [Near], and together they had Paul, who was born in 1921 in the old Griswold Inn.
"Son Elmer was a master carpenter and furniture maker who worked in downtown Worthington.
"Son Steve was a car dealer and gas-station owner, also in downtown Worthington. He later became the Worthington postmaster and worked out his years at Worthington Hardware.
"Leslie was a tire dealer in Delaware but lived most of his life in Worthington.
"Ray owned Snouffer Dry Cleaners at High Street and New England Avenue, later moving to one of brother Steve's properties at High and Worthington-Galena Road."

This Stephen Snouffer may be the Stephen Snouffer involved in the case of Snouffer v. Potter Lumber & Supply Co., vol. 77, Ohio Appellate Reports, p. 546, vol. 64, Northeastern Reporter, 2d, p. 77 (1945)(plaintiff Snouffer was a bus driver who hit defendant's truck; the court ruled he was contributorily negligent and not entitled to recover for his personal injuries).

In another case, Bartlett v. Snouffer, vol. 64 NorthEastern Reporter, 2d, p. 848 (Franklin Cnty, OH, Common Pleas; 17 Dec 1945), Bartlett brought an F.E.D. action in Sharon Twsp, Franklin Cnty, justice court, against a Stephen Snouffer to evict Snouffer from certain premises. Bartlett prevailed; Snouffer filed numerous subsequent motions in unsuccessful efforts to appeal. See, Snouffer v. Bartlett, vol. 64, NE2d, p. 848 (3 Nov 1945); Snouffer v. Bartlett, vol 65, NE2d, p. 168 (7 Jan 1946); Snouffer v. Bartlett, vol. 65, NE2d, p. 168 (31 Jan 1946).
