  • Notes
    • Of Archibald's father, Wm. J. Grove, HISTORY OF CARROLLTON MANOR, p. 143 (1928), states:
"John Benjamin Snouffer ... was married three times and was the father of twenty-two children. His first wife was Abbie Trail, his second wife was Malinda Moffett, his third wife was Annie Shreeve [sic]. [Children] Archibald and George [sic; Georgia] live in Oklahoma, Daniel in Colorado, Fannie in Kansas and Ashton on the Manor."

The 1880 census shows the family living in Kansas. It lists "Thomas," 11, born in Maryland, living with his father "Snauffer, J.B." and mother "Annie," 44, and some siblings. 1880 U.S. Census, Louisburg, Montgomery Cnty, KS (T 9, Roll 390, stamped p. 298)[LDS Film 1254390].

The 1900 census recorded "Archibald T" and his family living in Grant County, Oklahoma. It lists him as the 32-yr old head of household; born Mar 1868 in Maryland, and married for 14 years to his wife "Lidde C," also 32 and born Feb 1868 in Iowa. Also listed are their children: "Felicia C," born July 1887, 12-yrs old; Cora E, born Sept 1888, 11-yrs old; Adell R, born July 1890, 9-yrs old; Cecil M., born Feb 1892, 8-yrs old; Blossom N, born Sept 1894, 5-yrs old, and "Not Named Yet" [Harry], son, born Mar 1900, 2 months old. 1900 U.S. Census, Dirigo Twsp, Grant Cnty, Oklahoma Terr (T 623, Roll 1337, stamped p. 157).

      In 1910 the census lists Archibald, a 42-yr old farmer, and his family, including his wife of 23 years, Lydia C, 42, and children Cora E, 21, Adelle C, 19, Cecil M, 18, Blossom N, 15, Harry O, 10, and Chrystal M, 4. 1910 U.S. Census, Dirigo Twsp, Grant Cnty, OK (T 624, Roll 1253, stamped p. 180).

The 1920 census shows Archibald Thomas [an indexer read the name as Archibald Llowas !] Snouffer, 52, a farmer, and his wife Lydia C, 51, living with daughter Cora, 31, son Harry, 19, and his wife Lela, also 19, and a 14-yr old daughter, "Bluebell," probably Chrystal. 1920 U.S. Census, Dirigo Twsp, Grant Cnty, OK (T 625, Roll 1460, stamped p. 171).

      The 1930 census records "Arthur T," 62, and "Lela C," 62. living with their daughter "Bluebelle" Snouffer, 24, a stenographer in a "gas office." 1930 U.S. Census, Blackwell, Kay Cnty, OK (T 626, Roll 1908, ED 2, p. 3A).

In 1989 Helen Snouffer Brooks reported that Archibald lived in Oklahoma. Thus this Archibald probably was the plaintiff in Argo Oil Co. v. Snouffer, vol.175 Oklahoma Reports p. 382, vol. 52 Pacific 2d Reporter p. 803 (1935). In that case Archibald T. Snouffer sued the Argo Oil Co. for trespass, seeking damages for pollution of a stream that flowed through his farm property; Snouffer prevailed in the jury trial, and his judgment was affirmed on appeal.

He was not so fortunate in another case, Snouffer v. First Nat. Bank of Medford, vol. 86 Oklahoma Reports p. 190, vol. 207 Pacific Reporter p. 452 (1922). In that case the bank sued him on a promissory note and won. The note had been given in exchange for shares of stock in a company that was supposed to manufacture farm electric light plants, which it never did. The stock was worthless.
