  • Notes
    • The 1880 census lists John Snouffer, a 28 year old farmer born in Maryland living with his wife "Lizzie," 29, and a daughter "Bessie L," 1. 1880 U.S. Census, Independence, Montgomery Cnty, KS (T 9, Roll 389, stamped p. 240) [LDS film 1254389].

According to vol. 24, New Mexico Genealogist, p. 96 (Dec 1985):
"John Boone Snouffer was b 12 Oct 1852 at Hagerstown, MD. He d 18 May 1892 [sic] at Roanoke, VA, and is buried at a cemetery in Salem, VA. John mar 15 Dec 1874 to Elizabeth Jane Jennings at Covington, VA. Elizabeth was b 29 Jun 1847. She was the dau of Pollard and Elizabeth Jane (Lowman) Jennings. Elizabeth d 13 Jan 1917 at Tucumcari, NM.
"John and Elizabeth and four children came to New Mexico in the winter of 1881. They first settled in San Miguel County. They traveled via wagon train from Virginia via Kansas to New Mexico. Elizabeth was a nurse. John had a general store and was a homesteader.
      "Children were: (1) John Ben b 1876 VA; d 1878 KS. (2) Lennie May b 1877 KS; d 1878 KS. (3) Bessie b 1879 KS; d 1970 NM. She mar J.H.Pullen in Las Vegas, NM. (4) Joseph B. b in KS; d 1881 NM. (5) Sue Ellen b. 1881 NM; d 1965 CO. She mar Dallas Aber. (6) John b 1883 NM; d 1889 NM. (7) Richard b 1888 NM; d 1915 in CO."

In a letter sent to Wm.C.Snouffer in March, 2000, Mr. Wertz amplified:
"John Boone and Elizabeth Snouffer moved to Elk City (Montgomery County) Kansas in the mid 1870's (ca 1876-1877). It is my understanding that John Boone Snouffer had relatives in Montgomery County, Kansas....
"The John Boone Snouffer family moved to San Miguel County, New Mexico in 1880-81. They lived here until 1890 when they moved back to Salem, Virginia. When John Boone Snouffer died of a heart attack in 1892 [sic], the family moved back to New Mexico."

The Ancestral File (AFN: BDWD-LP) erroneously has John's dob as "Abt. 1843" and someone guessed it was near Fincastle, Botetourt Cnty, VA.

There is a debate in the family about whether the middle name should be spelled "Boone" or "Boon." The "Boone" spelling is used here because that is the way it is spelled on the Alleghany County, VA, marriage license of December 1874.

Funeral Notice, The Roanoke [VA] Times, p. 4 (21 May 1891):
      "Mr. Snouffer's Funeral.
"The Services at Greene Memorial and the Interment at Salem.
"The funeral of J. Boon [sic] Snouffer will be held to-day. The procession will start from the late residence of the deceased at 2 o'clock at Greene Memorial Methodist Church.... The remains will be interred in East Hill Cemetery, Salem.
      "The pall-bearers will be J. L. Kelly, J. A. Page, Kent H. Loving, R. H. McClaugherty, Walter Boone [sic] and E. N. Lynnam."

Funeral Notice, The Roanoke [VA] Times, p. 4 (22 May 1891):
"The remains of Mr. J. Boon [sic] Snouffer were buried yesterday afternoon from Greene Memorial Church.... The ceremony took place on East Hill cemetery, Salem, in [the] presence of many people of the two cities. The floral tributes were pretty and very appropriate. Mr. Snouffer was a good man and much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved wife and little children."

In Jan 2008, Gervaise Dynes-Wolak wrote:
"I called the city planner's office [in Salem, VA] and they were great. John Boone Snouffer IS there. He is in their records as "BOONE SNOFFER", died May 18, 1891. They have no info on a headstone, but he is buried in the Johnson family plot at ... Division #5 in the corner near the Lynchburg Turnpike Entrance. He is in Section 7 if that helps. She said ... [one] could look for the Johnsons and see if a marker is near for him. I can find no Johnson connection for Boone so I do not why he would be with them." A John "Snoffer" served as a Private for a few months during the Civil War. John "Snoffer" is listed as a Private in Company E, Fifth Maryland Infantry Regiment, from 16 Mar 1865 through 1 Sep 1865. L.A.Wilmer, J.H.Jarrett, G.W.F.Vernon, HISTORY AND ROSTER OF MARYLAND VOLUNTEERS, WAR OF 1861-5, vol. 1, p. 201 (Guggenheimer, Weil & Co., Baltimore, MD; 1898).

According to the authors (Ibid, pp. 179-180):
"The Fifth Maryland Infantry Regiment was organized at Baltimore City, Maryland, in September, 1861, to serve three years. ***
"Company E was recruited in Frederick County and Baltimore City.... ***
"[T]he 5th Regiment marched with the army of the Potomac, and bore a conspicuous part in the battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862. *** [It was assigned to another Division during 1863.]
"The regiment rejoined the army of the Potomac in 1864, and participated in the siege of Petersburg, June to September, 1864.... ***
"The battles and engagements in which the 5th Regiment of Infantry participated were ... [numerous, and included the] occupation of Richmond, Va., April 3, 1865.
"The 5th Regiment of Infantry was mustered out of the military service of the United States at Fredericksburg, Va., September 1, 1865, and transported thence to Baltimore, Md., where the regiment disbanded."

Four John Snouffers are possible candidates:
      (1) John Snouffer [36], born 6 Oct 1811, a fire company member in Emmitsburg, MD, who would have been 54 years old in 1865;
      (2) John Benjamin Snouffer [284], born 5 Jan 1816, and still living in Maryland when he married his 3d wife in 1859, who would have been 49 years old in 1865; and
      (3) His twin brother Benjamin John [285], born 5 Jan 1816, who also would have been 49 years old; but who probably was a Southern sympathizer; and
      (4) John Boone Snouffer [968], born 12 Oct 1852, who would have been only 13 years old in 1865.
