    • PA Death Certificate (# 21248; filed 25 Feb 1920) for "Huizinger C. Byers" states that he was born in "Pa." 3 Jun 1859 and died 22 Feb 1920. However, the handwritten original certificate spells his given name as "Huizinga." It also provides that his parents were Joshua Byers and Martha J. Wilson; that he was single; and that he was a travelling salesman. Cause of death was a diabetic coma. The certificate indicates that the place of burial was "Mt Zion" on 25 Feb 1920.
    • Obituary, Pottstown [PA] News, p. 1 (23 Feb 1920):
"Death of Major Huizinga C. Byers
"Prominent West Ward Man Dies After Brief Illness....
"Identified with National Guard of Pennsylvania for Many Years -- Resident of Pottstown Nearly All of His Life.
"Major Huizinga C. Byers, a well known resident of Pottstown, and highly esteemed by all who knew him, died at 3.40 o'clock yesterday morning at the family residence, 28 King street. His death was due to a complication of diseases, and followed an illness of a short duration. He was in the 61st year of his age. He lived in Pottstown fifty-eight years.
"The deceased was the son of the late Joshua Byers and Martha J. Byers and resided with the latter who is now well up in years. In 1885 he was appointed a member of the National Guard of Pennsylvania, in which he gave valuable service. As a member of the state organization he was popular with both officers and men. For over thirty-two years he was in the employ of Hance Bros. and White, manufacturing druggists of New York. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Pharmaceutical Association. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Transfiguration.
"Fraternally he was affiliated with the Masons, Elks, P.O.S. of A., Knights of the Golden Eagle and Odd Fellows. [And many others]... He was also a member of the old Philadelphia Fire Company. Besides his mother, one brother, L. W. Byers, of Wilkes-Barre, and one sister, Mrs. Joshua Hatfield, of New York, survive.
"Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon [25 Feb].... The interment will be made in Mt. Zion Cemetery."

    • (Research):
The spelling of Huizinger's given name is debatable, primarily because of variations in the hand-writing of the different scriviners -- census takers, clerks, relatives, etc -- who recorded the information.
Huizinga's original, hand-written death certificate records his name as "Huizinga." However, an indexer with the Pennsylvania Dep't of Health apparently classified the name as "Huizinger." That spelling was incoporated into Ancestry.com's database, and the spelling seems to control internet database searches.
Nevertheless the handwritten original is "Huizinga." That spelling is ratified by the local newspaper obituary, and certainly must have been used by his contemporaries. I am persuaded that the "Huizinga" spelling is more likely accurate.
Other spelling variations appear in the censuses:
