    • The 1920 census shows his father Otho L Snouffer, 23, born in Maryland, living with his wife Ethel M, 25, born in Louisiana, and son "Joseph L," 2, born in Virginia. The family was living with Otho's brother Roy B, 30, his wife Florence M, 29, both born in Maryland, and their son "Bernard R," 2, and an unnamed daughter, "0/12" months old, both born in the District of Columbia. «i»1920 U.S. Census, «/i»Washington, D.C. (T 625, Roll 210, stamped p. 34).

The 1930 Maryland census shows Joseph's mother, Ethel M. Waple, 35, who apparenlty had remarried, living with her husband Jered J. Waple, 48, a D.C. government inspector, and Virginia born children, Charles R, 19 (probably Jered's son by a prior marriage) and Ethel M, 1 & 6/12. Also living in the household is Ethel's son from her first marriage, Joseph L Snouffer, 12. «i»1930 U.S. Census, «/i»1st Precinct, Spauldings Dist, Boulevard Heights, Prince Georges Cnty, MD (T626, Roll 877, stamped p. 126).

Email from John Bayne, nephew to Mildred Bayne Snouffer, to Gervaise Dynes-Wolak (14 Feb 2008):
      «tab»"Gervaise,
«tab»"Joe, as you know, was Mildred's husband. He was a fireman at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. He was a talented painter, and in his spare time, painted scenes and still life. He also painted signs and that was his downfall.
«tab»"In 1957 or 1958, my father invited Joe and Mildred to our house on West River in Shady Side, MD. Joe was an avid fisherman and loved to visit with us. This time he was to paint some signs (for a fee) and visit and fish and swim. He and Mildred decided to borrow my brother's boat and go out for a ride (with some fishing). My brother's boat was an old wooden rowboat with a very large outboard. They were within sight of our house and stopped to fish. When it came time to start the boat, apparently Joe had the throttle up a little high, and when it "caught" as he pulled the cord, it revved high and he was thrown over the back of the boat.
«tab»"The boat took off and Joe was treading water. Mildred could not swim, and he was worried about her. She was worried about him and stood up to see where he was. He, in turn, was worried about her and from the water, tried to get her to sit down. Worrying about her he forgot about his problem and, while waving to her, drowned.
«tab»"I was about 10 at the time and remember it very well. Mildred never remarried. In their marriage, they had a son, stillborn. All three are buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, MD.....
      «tab»"John Bayne"
