  • Notes
    • The 1880 Census lists Edward Snouffer as a 7-yr old boy living with the family of Joshua and Margaret Michael. 1880 U.S. Census, Buckeystown, Frederick Cnty, MD (T 9, Roll 509, stamped p. 24) [LDS Film 1254509]. Presumably, because his father had died in 1875, his mother was forced to farm out some of the children to others; for example, his brother Oscar was living with the Nabler family, and his sister "Maggie" was living with the Curtis Thomas family.

The News [Frederick, MD] (15 Jun 1893):
"Doubs - June 14. *** Mrs. Catherine Snouffer and son, of Buckeystown, spent Sunday with [her son] E. N. Snouffer and friends at Doubs."

T.J.C. Williams & F. McKinsey, HISTORY OF FREDERICK COUNTY, p. 1419 (1910), report that Edward N. assisted his brother-in-law James Myers in running "a store for the sale of [groceries and] general merchandise in Buckeystown, Md." after 1905. Wm. J. Grove, HISTORY OF CARROLLTON MANOR, p. 143 (1928), also reported that Edward was living in Buckeystown.

Obituary, The Daily News [Frederick, MD], (2 Aug 1915):
"Mrs. Catherine Snouffer, widow of William Trail Snouffer, died yesterday afternoon [1 Aug]... She is survived by...Edward N. Snouffer of Buckeystown;***."

      The Frederick [MD] Post , p. 1 (9 Nov 1916):
"Toting a 22-calibre rifle and heading toward the polls to make good his threat to kill Edward Snouffer, an election judge in Precinct No. 1, in Buckeystown, Henry Bender was arrested on Tuesday evening [7 Nov] on the charge of attempted assualt and disturbing the peace.
"The scene was the result of a controvery in the polls of Precinct No. 1. Bender, say spectators, was given a ballot at 5 o'clock. In returning it voted, Bender was told by Judge Snouffer that it was improperly folded. Bender, it is alleged, resented this and began swearing. It is charged that he threatened to killl Judge Snouffer. He destroyed the ballot and left the polls.
"Half an hour later he was seen heading toward the polls carrying a gun.... The combined strength of five men was required to take Bender, who is said to have been drinking, into custody...."

The 1920 census shows Edward, 46, living with his wife Ruth M, 42, and children Helen G, Edward N, Jr, Roger V, and James M, as well as his mother-in-law, Margaret S. Myers, 82, and his brother-in-law "J. Bowers" Myers, 57, and a boarder. 1920 U.S. Census, Buckeystown, Frederick Cnty, MD (T 625, Roll 672, p. 26).

      The Frederick [MD] Post, p. 7 (13 Aug 1926):
"Names of delegates from seven more districts to the Democratic County Convention, Saturday [14 Aug], were announced Thursday [12 Aug]....
      "Additional delegates are as follows:
      "Buckeystown -- ... Mrs. E. N. Snouffer ... Geo. S. Allnutt, ... Richard Allnutt, ... E. N. Snouffer, Jr., E. N. Snouffer, ***. "

Funeral notice, The Frederick [MD] Post, p. 5 (2 Sep 1926):
"The funeral of John Archibald Snouffer took place from the home of his uncle C.M. Thomas, near Braddock, Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock.... The pallbearers were six nephews: E. Nelson Snouffer,***. "

The 1930 census lists "Edward N," as a 57 year old postmaster living with his wife "Ruth M," 52, children Helen J, Edward N, Jr, and James M, together with brother-in-law Bowers J. Myers and two boarders. 1930 U.S. Census, Buckeystown Dist, Frederick Cnty, MD (T 626, Roll 874, stamped p. 16). [The name appears to me as "Snouffer," but it is indexed as "Snauffer."]

Social announcement, The Frederick [MD] Post, p. 4 (11 Mar 1933):
"Mr. and Mrs. Edward N. Snouffer, of Buckeystown, spent last Sunday [5 Mar] in Baltimore where they attended the baptism of their grandson, Roger Van Leer Snouffer, Jr., infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger V. Snouffer. The event took place in St. David's Episcopal church ... and was followed by a dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Snouffer. Miss Helen Snouffer, who has been teaching at Clifton Falls, Va., has returned to Virginia after spending several days in Washington, Baltimore and at her home in Buckeystown. Miss Snouffer is a member of the Woman's Business and Professional Club of Clifton Falls."

The Frederick [MD] Post, p. 1 (11 Mar 1937), reported:
"Found guilty by a jury of robbing the postoffice and store of Edward N. Snouffer at Buckeystown and pleading guilty to another charge of receiving stolen goods, Sylvester Brown, ... was sentenced ... to five years in the Maryland House of Correction on each charge....
"The case was tried Monday morning [8 Mar] and the jury returned a verdict of guilty in less than one hour. It was testified that postage stamps of the value of $6.33 and cigarettes, cigars and smoking tobacco, valued at about $35, were stolen from the store. Brown was arrested while driving a truck ... containing the stolen tobacco. *** "

Edward's daughter Helen reported that Edward was a brick layer and owned his own business; he built their home, which he called "The Manor."

      Obituary, The Semi-Weekly News [Frederick, MD], p. 3 (26 May 1953), and The Frederick [MD] Post, p. 5 (25 May 1953):
"Edward Nelson Snouffer, retired postmaster, formerly of Buckeystown, died at the National Lutheran home, 18th and Douglas Streets, Washington, D.C. Saturday night [23 May] at 1:30 o'clock after an illness of ten days; aged 80 years. He was a son of the late William Trail and Catherine Schaeffer Snouffer.
