    • Of Lewis Ashton's father, Wm. J. Grove, HISTORY OF CARROLLTON MANOR, p. 143 (1928), states:
      "John Benjamin Snouffer ... was married three times and was the father of twenty-two children. His first wife was Abbie Trail, his second wife was Malinda Moffett, his third wife was Annie Shreeve [sic]. [Children] Archibald and George [sic; Georgia] live in Oklahoma, Daniel in Colorado, Fannie in Kansas and Ashton on the Manor."

      The 1880 census shows the family living in Kansas. It lists "Lewis A" as a 5 year old boy, born in Virginia, living with his father "Snauffer, J.B." and mother "Annie" and siblings. 1880 U.S. Census, Louisburg, Montgomery Cnty, KS (T 9, Roll 390, stamped p. 298)[LDS Film 1254390].

      The 1900 census shows "Louis A" Snouffer, 25 yrs old, born Mar 1875, and a farmer, living with his first wife "Rebecca," 24, born Mar 1876, and their son George L, 10-months old, born July 1899. Living next door is his second cousin, Otho T. Snouffer, 53, born Oct. 1846, and also a farmer. 1900 U.S. Census, Buckeystown prct, Frederick Cnty, MD (T 623, Roll 622, stamped pp. 19-20).

      The News [Frederick, MD], p. 5 (9 Sep 1915):
      "Judgment Reduced. -- In the appeal case of Lewis A. Snouffer against Mrs. Amanda Orrison, a jury yesterday afternoon awarded the latter $24. The suit was for six tons of hay valued at $96, and at the [earlier] trial before Justice Dennis, Mrs. Orrison was awarded $54. Yesterday Snouffer pleaded recoupment for damages alleged to have been suffered for other alleged breaches of contract...."

      The 1920 census lists "Louis A" Snouffer as a 44 year old widower and a farmer, living with a housekeeper and two servants. 1920 U.S. Census, Buckeystown, Frederick Cnty, MD (T 625, Roll 672, stamped p. 16).

      The 1930 census lists "Lewis A" Snouffer as a 54 year old man, born in Maryland, and living with his wife Bertha L, 36, and children Lewis B, 8, Eleanor T, 6, and William K, 5, in Buckeystown. 1930 U.S. Census, Buckeystown Dist., Frederick Cnty, MD (T 626, Roll 784, stamped p. 20).

      Helen Snouffer Brooks reported in 1989 that Ashton's first wife was "Betty Snouffer (a cousin)." She actually was his first cousin, once removed.

      Obituary, The Frederick [MD] Post, p. 5 (16 Jan 1943):
      "Lewis Ashton Snouffer, a well-known resident of Frederick and Frederick county, died at his home, 229 South Market street, at two a.m., Friday [15 Jan], after an illness lasting over four months, aged 67 years, 10 months, and 8 days.
      "He was a son of the late John Benjamin and Annie Shreve [sic] Snouffer and is survived by his [second] wife, Mrs. Bertha Turner Snouffer, and the following children: L. Bertram Snouffer, U.S.N.R.; Miss Eleanor Turner Snouffer and William Kirk Snouffer, both of Washington, D.C.; also one son by a former marriage, George L. Snouffer, of Washington, D.C.; and one brother, Daniel B. Snouffer, of Denver, Colorado.
      "Deceased's parents resided in Kansas and came to Frederick county when he was seven years of age, and he was reared in the home of his late cousin, G.A.T. Snouffer, on Carroll's Manor. A greater part of his life was spent in farming. He later was associated with the State Roads Commission, and more recently was employed at Hood College. Mr. Snouffer was a member of the All Saints church, of this city.
      "*** Services will be held at All Saints church at 3.30 p.m. Sunday [17 Jan]. Burial will be made in Mt. Olivet cemetery...."

      Lewis is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, MD, in sec. P, lot 7, grave 3.
