  • Notes
    • The 1900 Census lists Eugenie Ferro, 23, born Nov 1876, in Virginia, living with her father Edward, 50, a life insurance broker, born Oct 1849 in Columbia, South America; her mother Alice E, 49, born Oct 1850 in New York; and her sister Anita E, 28, born Aug 1871 in Virginia. The census records that Edward had immigrated to the U.S. in 1864, had been in the country for 36 years, and that he and Alice had been married 30 years. 1900 U.S. Census, Manhattan, New York County, NY (T 623, Roll 1105, stamped p. 298B).

Eugenie is listed in the 1910 census as "Eugene" Ferro, female, aged 34, born in Virginia, with no employment shown. She lived with her mother Alice, 58, in the household of Alice's brother-in-law Robert H. Allnutt, 58, a farmer born in Maryland, and his son, Robert C, 4, born in Virginia. 1910 U.S. Census, Spencer, Powhatan Cnty, VA (T 624, Roll 1640, stamped p. 215).

On 31 Oct 1910, in Richmond, VA, Eugenie married Archie Snouffer. Apparently she advised the licensing authorities that she had been born in 1881. Her parents were listed as Edward and Alice E. Ferro. Archie's birth year was given as 1883; his parents were George and Mittie Snouffer. See, "Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940," On-line database at http://pilot.familysearch.org, LDS Film 2048499, Batch Number: I07894-5 (accessed Apr 1022). [G. L. Thomas, English Thomas Genealogy, pp. 94-95 (G.L. Thomas, Adamstown, MD: 1956), states that Archie T. Snouffer married "Eugenia Allnutt." That assertion appears to be incorrect.]

The 1920 census shows Eugenie, 34, born in Virginia, living with her husband "Archie T," 35, born in Maryland and employed as an insurance co. "collector," and their two Washington, D.C.-born daughters: Elizabeth A, 8; and Dorothy E, 7. The census notes that Eugenie's father was born in Columbia, South America. Also in the household were Eugenie's widowed mother Alice E, 69, and her widowed sister Annetta [Anita] Howard, 36. 1920 U.S. Census, Washington, D.C. (T 625, Roll 208, stamped p. 230).

The 1930 census lists "Eugenia" Snouffer as 44 years old, born in Maryland and living with her family in Washington, D.C. Also living with them was Eugenie's widowed mother Alice Ferro, 79. 1930 U.S. Census, Washington, D.C. (T 626, Roll 293, ED 47, p. 5A; stamped p. 188).

"Eugenie" and her husband Archie are buried under a single headstone in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, MD, in sec. Q, lot 31, grave # 1.

According to the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Eugenie actually was 5 years older than stated in her marriage information and on her tombstone.

Eugenie also wasn't entirely candid with census takers. When her parents gave information to the census takers in 1900 they gave her birth year of 1876. In 1910 her parents advised census takers that she was 34 (a birth year of 1876). But as a married woman in 1920, Eugenie gave her age as 34 (a birth year of 1886) -- thus asserting that she had not aged a bit during the intervening 10 years! And, again, in 1930, she told them she was 44 (a birth year of 1886).

Her tombstone birth date of 1881 is understandable, insofar as her husband, who survived her, had thought since their marriage in 1910 that she had been born in 1881.
