- In the 1880 census lists Charles' parents, Emma J, 24, and her husband Francis A. Diller, 27, a farm worker, living with Charles. They were living in the home of her parents, John J and Elizabeth Fitch. 1880 U.S. Census, Mt. Pleasant, Frederick Cnty, MD (T 9, Roll 510, stamped p. 422).
By 1900 Charles' family had moved to Ohio, along with his mother's parents, John and Elizabeth Fitch, who lived next door to them. The census lists his mother Emma J, 45, born Feb 1855, living with his father Francis A. Diller, 47, born Feb 1853. Francis and Emma had been married for 21 years; and Emma had borne 3 children in Maryland, all of whom lived with them: "Mary E"; Charles M, 20, born Oct 1879; and "Hellen E". Francis was a laborer, and his son Charles was a clerk. 1900 U.S. Census, Jackson Twsp, Seneca Cnty, OH (T 623, Roll 1320, stamped p. 1A). (The written dates and ages of the two girls are suspect. Mary's original entry reads that she was born Oct 1875 and was 16 years old; someone has written "24" over the original 16. Helen's original entry reads that she was born Oct 1882, and was 13 years old; someone has written "1883" over the original, and "17" over the original 13.)
The 1920 census lists Charles M Diller, 38, living with his wife Estella, 38, born in Ohio, and their Ohio-born son Clarence, 18. Charles is employed as a "traveling salesman" of "Novelties." 1920 U.S. Census, 3d Ward, Hillsboro, Hill Cnty, TX (T 625, Roll 1818, stamped p. 93).
In 1930, Charles and his wife were still living in Texas. The census lists Charles M, 50, born in Maryland, living with his wife "Estell C," 50, born in Ohio. Charles still worked as a "commercial traveler" for a "Novelty company." The census reported that they were married when they were 21 years old (i.e., in 1901). 1930 U.S. Census, Hillsboro, Hill Cnty, TX (T 626, Roll 2357, stamped p. 53).
