  • Notes
    • In 1910 his father Henry M. Hanna, 56, lived with his wife of 14 years, "Meda," 44, and their two sons: William, 11; and John 4. Henry and the two boys were born in Iowa; Hanna ("Meda") was born in PA. 1910 U.S. Census, Tipton, Cedar Cnty, IA (T 624, Roll 395, stamped p. 39).
    • On 8 Aug 1925, John Helmer Hanna, 21, married Kathleen Nugent, 21, at the Baptist Parsonage in Vinton, Benton Cnty, IA. His father's name was Henry Hanna; his mother, Hanna Almeda Helmer. Kathleen had been born in 1904, in New Hampton, IA, to William John Nugent and "Martin Martin." See Iowa Marriages, 1809-1992, https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XJ46-MXX (LDS Film 1871615).
    • John's marital situation may have changed between 1925 and 1940. The 1940 census lists John H. Hanna, 34, living with his wife "Margaret," 26, in Cedar Rapids. John was a city police officer. 1940 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 627, Roll 1177, stamped p. 132 B).
    • In 1957 John became a state fire marshal. According to the Council Bluffs Iowa Nonpareil, p. 3 (11 Jun 1957):
"Iowa has a new deputy fire marshal assigned to the eastern part of the state. He is John Hanna, a retired policeman from the Cedar Rapids force who was in charge of the detective bureau when he retired recently. Hanna ... has several years training in arson detection at Purdue University..."
    • By 1963 he was the Univ. of Iowa's police chief. The Council Bluffs Nonpareil, p. 12 (26 Jul 1963) reported:
"Iowa City. About $9,000 worth of platinum instruments, taken from a safe at the University of Iowa recently, have been recovered.....
"Campus Police Chief John Hanna said all the instruments were recovered, but several crucible covers were damaged from being folded and some of the platinum wire had been twised or bent...."
    • His brother William's obituary in The Cedar Rapids [IA] Gazette, p. 3 (23 Sep 1965) states, in part:
"William M. Hanna ... died Thursday [sic; Tuesday, 21 Sep]. He was born May 20, 1898, near Tipton. His wife, Marcella, preceded him in death in 1958....
"Surviving is a brother, John Hanna, of Iowa City...."
    • (Research:)
There may have been more than one John H. Hanna living in Iowa at the time. See, e.g., the 1930 U.S. Census, which lists a John H. Hanna, 29, living with his wife of 3 years, Edna M, 25. John was employed as an "Attendant" at an "Oil Station." 1930 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (T 626, Roll 665, stamped p. 211 B).
