    • The 1930 census lists his father L. Lawrence Byers, 42, living with his wife Mamie M, 35, and 4 children: Francis L, 16; Charles E, 11; H. Henry, 8; and Helen J, 6. His father was a foundry worker. 1930 U.S. Census, New Oxford, Adams Cnty, PA (T 626, Roll 1959, stamped p. 48B).

      "NEW OXFORD - Charles E. (Tilt) Byers, 83, of New Oxford, died Tuesday [18 Dec] at his home. He was the husband of Janet V. (Baker) Byers.
      "The service will be 9:30 a.m. Friday [21 Dec].... Burial will be in New Oxford Cemetery, with graveside military rites by the Allied Veterans Council of Hanover....
      "Mr. Byers was born Aug. 5, 1918, in New Oxford. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Mamie (Frey) Byers.
      "He worked at Medusa Cement Co. in York, retiring in 1980 after 25 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in New Oxford, Abbottstown Fire Company, New Oxford Social and Athletic Club and National American Association of Retired Persons; a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8956 in West York and American Legion Post 14 in Hanover. He signed to play baseball for Cleveland and finished his career with Wilkes Barre Class A in 1948; he also played with several local teams; was the pitching coach for New Oxford Junior Baseball Clubber Team and Abbottstown for 25 years. He was inducted into "Hall of Fame" Archives in Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1988. He was a U.S. Army staff sergeant, serving in Japan.
      "Mr. Byers also is survived by three sons, Larry L. Byers of Abbottstown, David L. Byers of Dover and Steven M. Byers of Allentown; a daughter, Vickie M. Buckley of Littlestown; nine grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; a great-grandchild; and four stepgreat-grandchildren...."
