  • Notes
    • The 1850 census lists George as a 5 year old boy living with his parents, "Geo Snoffer," 39, and Mary, 36, and the following children: Ellen, 15; Somerset, 13; Catherine, 9; Rebecca, 7; George, 5; Martha, 3; Mary S, 1 month, and "Louisa Duval," 90. The oldest child, Ellen, was born in MD; all the rest, in Ohio. 1850 U.S. Census, Perry Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (M 432, Roll 680, stamped p. 232). [While the census-taker's handwriting clearly reads "Snoffer," the indexer for Ancestry.com strangely lists the surname as "Swoffer."]
    • In 1860 the census shows his father "Snoffer, George," a 53 year old farmer born in Maryland, living with his wife "Mary A," 45, and children: "Sommersett," 22; "Catharine," 19; Rebecca, 17; George, 15; Martha, 12; Mary, 9; Joseph, 6; and "Willie," 3. 1860 U.S. Census, Perry Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (M 653, Roll 962, stamped p. 294).
    • A "George B." or "George V." Snouffer served as a private in the Ohio Infantry (National Guard), 133d Regiment, Company E. See http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm (citing National Archives film 552, roll 101) (accessed 28 Jan 2006). In History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio, p. 153 (Williams Bros. Printers; 1880), he is listed as a private in Company E. His uncle, David Snouffer, and his cousins, John B. and John H. Snouffer, also served in the same regiment and company. "George V. Snoffer"[sic] claimed a Civil War Pension on 19 Mar 1898. The claim was filed in Louisana. The records show that he served in: "E, 133, Ohio Inf." See: U.S. Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934, Online database, http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=4654
    • In 1870 the census shows "Snouffer George," 26, born in Ohio, living with his wife Mary, 23, born in Germany, and two children: "Wm. H," 2; and Ida, 1. George worked as a "Huxter" [a peddler, or door-to-door salesman]. The two children were born in Ohio. 1870 US Census, Beaver Twsp, Mahoning Cnty, OH (M 593, Roll 1239, stamped p. 48).
    • The 1880 census lists a "G. V. Snoffer," single, 33 yrs old, born in Ohio, with both parents born in Maryland, whose occupation was as a fisherman. 1880 U.S. Census, Shreveport, Caddo Parish, LA (T 9, Roll 449, stamped p. 404)[LDS Film 1254449].
    • The 1900 census reports that "Snoffer, George," single, 55 yrs old, born in April 1845 in Ohio, of a father born in Maryland and a mother in Pennsylvania, was working as a fisherman (although he had been unemployed for 7 months). 1900 U.S. Census, Ward 6 ["West of Atchafalaya river, including Berwick City, excluding Morgan City"], Saint Mary Parish, LA; ED 87 (T 623, Roll 582, stamped p. 302, line 25). [Supposedly George lived with a 17-yr old adopted daughter, "Picou, Gilmore", born Aug 1882 in Louisiana; which doesn't make much sense, given that Gilmore (not to be sexist about it) is clearly a male name, and Gilmore appears only as a male in a couple of FamilySearch databases.]
    • In 1910 the census records that George "Snofer," 64-yr old single man, born in Ohio, a "gardener" working on a "truck farm," still lived in Louisiana. 1910 U.S. Census, Ward 4, Des Allemands, St. Charles Parish, LA. (T 624, Roll 528, ED 65, stamped p. 108 B, line 64). See: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MPBM-ZFR (LDS Film 1374541).
    • The Louisiana "Statewide Death Index" records his name as "George V. Snapper."
