  • Notes
    • When her son John died in 1939, The Worthington [OH] News(14 Dec 1939), reported that he was the son of "Capt. John Snouffer and Julia Rogers Snouffer," and that his parents were "among the early pioneers in this section."

The 1850 census lists her husband "John Snuffer," 32, a farmer, born in MD, living with Julia, 27, born in Ohio, and the following Ohio-born children: Ellen, 9; "Margarett," 7; John, 4; and "Sylvana," 2. Also in the home was another John, 13, whose relationship is not stated. 1850 U.S. Census, Perry Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (M432, Roll 680, stamped p. 236 B). [The penmanship of the census taker is ambiguous; the surname appears to me as "Snuffer," while his brother Michael's name is clearly spelled "Snoffer." The Ancestry.com indexer listed the surname as "Snaffer."]

The 1860 census shows "Julia Ann," 37, born in Ohio, living with her husband John Snouffer, 42, and children Ellen, Margaret, John and Sylvania, together with her mother-in-law, "Maria Snouffer," 84. 1860 U.S. Census, Worthington P.O., Perry Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (M 653, Roll 962, stamped p. 307).

In 1870 the census reports that "Julia" is a 47-yr old woman, born in Ohio, "Keeping House," and living with her husband "Snoffer, John" daughter "Sintha" [a nickname for Sylvania?], 21, and 8-yr old grandson Willie Armstrong. 1870 U.S. Census, Perry twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (M 593, Roll 1200, stamped p. 679).

The 1880 census shows the 4 of them still living together: "Snaffer [sic], B. John," a 62 yr old farmer, living with his wife Julia, 57, who was "keeping house," daughter Sylvania, 32, who "assists in home," and grandson William Armstrong, 19. 1880 U.S. Census, Perry twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 9, Roll 1015, stamped p. 171)

According to the Franklin Cnty, OH, Probate Court Administration Docket 11:319 (3 Nov 1888), Julia's husband John died 21 Oct 1888. His will may be found in Franklin Cnty Will Record L:315. It bequeathed all real and personal property to his wife Julia A. Snouffer, and upon her death, the real estate was to be divided among their children.

The 1900 census lists Julia A. Snouffer, 77, born in Ohio in April 1823, and the mother of 5 children, 4 of whom are alive. She is shown as a "housekeeper" and head of a household consisting of her daughter "Sylvania," 57, a servant, "Little Cassie," 15, and a grand-nephew, William V. Preston, 24, a farm laborer. 1900 U.S. Census, Perry twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 623, Roll 1270, stamped p. 182).

Julia is buried in Union Cemetery, SE Section (1879), Row 13. See Donald M. Schlegel, Early Memorials in Union Cemetery, Franklin County, Ohio, p. 23 (1999).
    • "Ohio Marriages, 1800-1958" lists her name as "Susan Ann Rogers."
