  • Notes
    • Clara was born 26 Jun 1851 and was baptized 26 Aug 1851 by Father John B. Byrne. See Richard T. Koch & Phyllis I. Davidson, Western Maryland Catholics, 1819-1851, p. 213 (1998): "[Baptism List] 26 Aug 1851 Clara Regina Snoffner [sic] b 26 Jun 1851 d/o Joshua & Anne Snouffer; Sp[onser]s: Ja[me]s McHenry & Rosanne McCusker. - JBB [Rev. John B. Byrne] (p102)"

Father John B. Byrne ["JBB"] was associated with Mount St. Mary's Catholic Church, Emmitsburg, MD. See Thomas J. Stanton, A Century of Growth; The History of the Church in Western Maryland, vol. 2, p. 50 (John Murphy Co., Baltimore: 1900).

It is presumed that Clara died while still a child. She is not mentioned in the 1860 or subsequent census records relating to this Snouffer family. In the 1860 census, for example, the only children listed are daughters "Ann E," 10, born in Maryland, and Iowa-born daughters Mary C, 6 and Fanny A, 3; and sons "John R," 11, born in Illinois [sic], and Joshua J, 1, born in Iowa. 1860 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids, Linn Cnty, IA (M 653, Roll 332, stamped p. 446, written p. 114).
