  • Notes
    • The 1900 census lists his father George W Elsfelder, 43, born Feb 1857 in Ohio to parents born in Ohio, living with his wife of 5 years, Liona M Elsfelder, 27, born Jun 1872 in Illinois to parents born in Germany, and their son Walter L, 4, born March 1896 in Oregon. 1900 U.S. Census, Ward 11, Portland, Multnomah Cnty, OR (T 623, Roll 1351, stamped p. 78).

In 1910 the family was living in Columbia Cnty. The census lists George W, 53, living with his wife of 14 years, Liona M, 37 and their 3 Oregon-born children: Walter L, 14; Glenn W, 5; and Howard O, 3. 1910 U.S. Census, Oak Point, Columbia Cnty, OR (T 624, Roll 1279, stamped p. 66B).

In 1920 the family lived across the Columbia River in Washington. The 1920 census lists his father George, 62, living with his mother Liona, 47, and their 3 sons: Walter, 23; Glenn, 15; and Howard 13. Walter was a college student, and Glenn, a high school student. 1920 U.S. Census, Fourth Plain Prct, Clark Cnty, WA (T 625, Roll 1921, stamped p. 259).

Walter apparently attended McMinnville College, in McMinnville, OR, in 1914-1915. In 1920 he was attending the Univ. of Chicago, Chicago, IL. See: http://userdb.rootsweb.ancestry.com/alumni/.

At the time of their marriage in New York City on 13 July 1920, Walter stated that his residence was Chicago, IL, while Isabelle stated that hers was Paris, France.

Walter applied for a U.S. passport, and one was issued to him 12 Sep 1921; according to his application, he was born 9 Mar 1896 in Portland, OR.

Thereafter he travelled in Europe. On 22 Oct 1927 he arrived in Quebec, Canada, after sailing from Cherbourg, France aboard the Empress of Scotland, and then re-entered the U.S. See: Records of the INS, The National Archives, Washington, D.C. (accessed via www.Ancestry.com, "Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956," database online (2008). And, on 27 Feb 1941 he arrived in New York City aboard the Siboney, having sailed from Lisbon, Portugal. See: "Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1897-1957," Records of the INS, The National Archives, Washington, D.C. (T 715, Roll 6528, p. 17).

Neither Walter nor Isabelle was listed in the 1930 U.S. Census; perhaps they were traveling internationally.

When he registered for the draft in 1942, Walter was living in New York City, New York. He gave his full name as Walter Lee Elsfelder, and a date of birth of 9 Mar 1896 in Portland, Oregon.

The Social Security Death Index provides that Walter (SSN 064-18-1830; issued in New York) was born 9 Mar 1896 and died Jun 1976 while living in New York City.
    • (Research):
According to one New York City marriages index, a Walter Elsfelder married Isabelle Sylatycn on 13 Jul 1920. http://www.italiangen.org/NYCmarrigesearch.asp. This is problematical insofar as Walter is listed as living in Washington during the 1920 census taking; he also was attending the Univ. of Chicago. So, this may be a different Walter Elsfelder.

The Manhattan marriage cert # is 32288.
