  • Notes
    • The data on her name and place of birth are taken from her daughter Gertrude's death certificate (Or. Death Cert. #39-210), the 1880 Oregon census, as well as the Pleasant Valley Cemetery data, at http://www.pleasantviewcemetery.org/mon-b6a.htm#Brandt,%20Fredericka (accessed Mar 2009).

According to her daughter Gertrude's obituary in the Sherwood [OR] Valley News (31 Aug 1939), Gertrude was born in 1869 and "soon after her birth the family moved to Illinois where they lived until 1877, when they came to Oregon and settled near this city...."

The census recorded on 15 & 16 June, 1880 shows Frederika as head of the family, aged 33, born in "Wurtemberg," and lists her occupation as a farmer. The census lists 6 children living with her at the time: "Gertrude U", 11; Rosa L, 9; Liona M, 8; Henry A, 6; Frank D, 3; and Charles D, 1. 1880 U.S. Census, Cedar Creek Prct, Washington Cnty, OR (T 9, Roll 1084, stamped p. 376) [LDS Film 1255084] (the handwritten "a" in Frederika is so tiny that indexers list her as "Frederick").

There is evidence that Margaret married a man named Eldredge at some point after Charles' death in 1879. As written in 1935 by Ronald A. Sherk, "History of Sherwood," published in Land of Tuality, Washington County, Oregon, vol. 1, pp. 66-81 (Washington County, Or, Historical Society: 1975):
"In 1883 a railroad company ... bought the right of way for a railroad from Portland to Dundee. The actual construction took place in 1885. *** The building of the railroad meant the influx of hundreds of workers into this vicinity. There were no hotels, so the farmers opened their doors to the newcomers. Smockville [as Sherwood was named until the 1890s] became a community of boarding houses. Mrs. Archie Campbell tells that her mother, Mrs. Eldredge, kept the men who were cutting and hewing the ties for the railroad." (Ibid, pp. 70-71.)

In 1920 the census shows "Margaret Eldridge," 73, born in Germany, living with her daughter Rosa L Brown, 49, born in Virginia, and her husband Oliver K Brown, 58, born in Illinois, and her two grandsons, Ralph, 26 (born in Indiana) and Robb, 21 (born in California). The census records that Margaret emigrated to the U.S. in 1850. 1920 U.S. Census, Assembly Dist. 26, Prct 66, San Francisco, San Francisco Cnty, CA (T 625, Roll 135, stamped p. 263).
    • (Research):
Charles and Fredericka are not listed in the 1870 Iowa Census. There is, however, an intriguing entry of a Charles Brandt and his wife "Ricka." Charles is reported to be 36 yrs old; "Ricka" as 30; and both born in Virginia. (1870 U.S. Census, Eden Twsp, Clinton Cnty, IA (M 593, roll 384, stamped p. 238). However, they do not reappear in the 1880 Iowa census.

No likely Brandts or Brants are found in the 1870 censuses for Iowa, Illinois or Virginia, where other sources indicate they might have been.
