  • Notes
    • In 1860, the census shows her parents "Geo." Hastings, 46, and "Ellen," 41; "Wm," 19; and "Geo," 17; all born in Scotland; and Illinois-born [sic] children "C," 15; "Jane," 13; "Is," 11; "Eliz," 9; "Jas," 7; Mary, 5; and "Allen," 1, [sic; Ellen, who was listed as a male]. 1860 U.S. Census, Laprairie Twsp, Marshall Cnty, IL (M 653, Roll 210, stamped p. 184).
    • The 1880 Illinois census lists "Camble, Elisabeth," as a 29 year old woman born in Illinois, living with her husband "Mathew," 39, and two sons, both born in Illinois: William, 2, and George H, 7 months. 1880 U.S. Census, Kendall, Kendall Cnty, IL (T 9, Roll 219, stamped p. 329)(the census indexer misread her husband's surname, so they are indexed as "Camhle"). See also: Elmer G. Dickson, 1880 Census of Kendall County, IL, p. 119 (published by E.G.Dickson, Chico, CA: 1994).

The 1910 Illinois census shows Elizabeth Campbell as a 58-yr old female, head of household, whose parents were born in Scotland, living with two of her children, son George H, then 30 years old and single, and daughter Ellen R, 28 and single. 1910 U.S.Census, Kendall Twsp, Kendall Cnty, IL (T 624, Roll 295, ED 65, stamped p. 233-B).

The Record of Marriage, Marshall Cnty, IL, reads:
"Mr. Matthew Campbell, Kendall Illinois was married to Ms. Lizzie Hastings, LaPrairie Illinois in Marshall County on the 30th day of March A.D. 1877 by H.H.Houston, a Minister of the Gosepl."

Kendall County Record -- Obituary (22 Nov 1916):
"ELIZABETH HASTINGS -- was born in Marshall county, Illinois, February 19, 1851. She was of Scotch descent, her parents, George and Ellen (Rae) Hastings having been married in Scotland. She was married to Mathew [sic] Campbell March 30, 1877, and they came at once to Kendall county to make their home, living on the farm now occupied by the son Mathew [sic]. In 1887 they purchased the Henry Jessup farm and moved there where in June of the same year her husband died. She was the mother of five children, William, George H., Ellen Rae, James M., who died at the age of one year, and Mathew. As long as she lived in the country [sic], she with her family were members and regular attendants at the Na-au-say Presbyterian church. She has been an invalid for a number of years and with her daughter Ellen Rae has made her home in Aurora. On this account she has led a very quiet life, few coming in contact with her except her family and immediate friends. With scarcely a moment's warning she departed this life November 13, 1916, at her home in Fox street, Aurora. Because of her suffering and her frailty she was greatly beloved by children and grandchildren and will be deeply mourned. Especially will this be true of the daughter 'Nellie' who was her devoted and constant companion. She also leaves a brother and sister who live in Chillicothe, Illinois."

Another newspaper clipping reads (in part):
[She was buried] "beside her husband and son. The pall bearers were six nephews, James Campbell, Bob McCulloch, Matt McCulloch, Wallace Ferguson, Rob McClaren and Bob Harvey who tenderly carried her to her last resting place. She leaves to mourn her loss three sons, William, George and Matthew of Yorkville, Ill., one daughter, Ellen, of Aurora, Ill., twelve grandchildren, one brother, James Hastings and one sister Miss Belle Hastings, of LaPrairie, Ill. To these we extend tenderest sympathy and especially to the sons and invalid daughter and commend them to the care of our Heavenly Father."
