  • Notes
    • Christina's father Valentine's will -- in which she is named "Christenor Snowfer" -- is located in Frederick County Will Book GM #2, pp. 437-438. The will was signed 20 June 1791; it appears that it was admitted to probate 5 June 1792, with an accounting filed 20 Aug 1793. Ibid. The will is abstracted in "Frederick County Wills, Liber GM#2," vol. 8, Western Maryland Genealogy, at p. 137 (1992), and in M.B. Hageness, Abstract of Wills, Liber GM#2, 1783-1794, Frederick County, Maryland, pp. 58-59 (MLH Research, Anniston, AL (2001) [LDS Film 1440551].

The will provides among other things that "I Valentine Rinehart of Frederick County ... give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Barbary [sic] all my estate both real and personal during her life, ... and at the death of my said wife that he my said son [George] shall give to my four daughters whose names is [sic] as follows, viz, that is to say Elizabeth Sorrier, Catrin Shaul, Christenor Snowfer [sic], and Mary Weaver, the sum of forty pounds ... until one hundred and sixty pounds is paid ... and ... the rest of my estate real and personal not heretofore mentioned be equally divided amongst my son and four daughters abovementioned ***."

Vol. 9, MARYLAND GERMAN CHURCH RECORDS, p. 85 (C.T. Zahn & F.S. Weiser, eds; 1993), restating records from the Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, show that "Joh. and Christina Schrauffer" were sponsors for the baptism of Johann Henry Hoppe on 6 Apr. 1801. John Henry Hoppe was their grandson.

"John [Snouffer]'s wife was Phillipina Christina Rinehart/Reinhardt, daughter of Valentine and Barbara Reinhardt. *** John and ... Christina Snouffer had eight children. *** Christina Snouffer died 15 Oct. 1818 and is buried alongside John in the Kriders Cemetery. Her stone is plainly legible, faring far better than that of her husband." (THE SNUFFERS, pp. 79-83)

J.T. Scharf, HISTORY OF WESTERN MARYLAND, p. 923 (1882), discusses names of persons buried at St. Benjamin's or "Kreiger's" Lutheran Church, and lists: "Johannes Schnauffer *** and his wife, Christina, born in 1756, died Oct. 15, 1818."

Christina "SchnauBer" and her husband Johanes are buried in Krider's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Westminster, MD, in sec. B, row 20, lots 47 & 48. See vol. 5, part 1, CARROLL COUNTY CEMETERIES, p. 107 (Carroll Cnty Genealogical Soc'y, 1999). Both headstones were standing upright until recently, but by Oct. 2006 Johanes' stone had fallen over on its face.

Christina's tombstone is still quite legible, after nearly 200 years: "Hier Ruhet | CHRISTINA SCHNAUBER | Geboren im Jahr 1756 | Gestorben den 15den | October 1818; | ihr alter war 62 Jahr." Compare: "Old Krider's Cemetery Inscriptions," vol. 16, Carrolltonian, p. 22 (1996).

A rough translation is: "Here rests Christina Schnauffer | born in the year 1756 | died the 15th [of] October 1818 | in her 62nd year."
    • (Research):
There is some disagreement about Christina's given names. Her tombstone gives her name as "Christina SchnauBer" (the "B" being old German for ff). And as her General Notes show, many will or probate documents state her name as Christina, or a close variant thereof. And in his will, her husband John named her as "my beloved wife Christina." Church records consistently name her as Christina. For example, on 5 Nov 1786 "Joh. Shnauffer, wife Christina" took Holy Communion at Krider's church. Vol. 9, MARYLAND GERMAN CHURCH RECORDS, p. 57 (C.T. Zahn & F.S. Weiser, eds; 1993). Also "John and Christina Shnauffer" were sponsors at the baptism of Johannes Shnerr on 16 Aug 1795. Ibid. at 44.

But Jim Wood, in his book THE SNUFFERS, p. 79, states that "John [Snouffer]'s wife was Phillipina Christina Rinehart/Reinhardt, daughter of Valentine and Barbara Reinhardt." He cites Diane Pheneger as his source for that information. However, in Nov. 2005, Ms. Pheneger advised that she has no records or charts reflecting the name Phillipina.

Some slight support for the name Philippina is found on two tombstones in the Krider's cemetery. First, the tombstone of Christina's daughter Barbara Schnauffer Angel indicates that Barbara was the daughter of "John Snouffer and wife Phillipina Christina." Second, Christina's husband John's headstone suggests that there may have been another given name preceding the name Christina, but that headstone is so faded through time that the preceding name can no longer be read. (See the relevant entry in John's "Notes.")

Because of Jim Wood's information in THE SNUFFERS , numerous internet and web site publications list her name as "Phillipina Christina." (Virtually none of them gives credit to Mr. Wood as their source.) I have chosen to drop "Phillipina" because it is not supported by substantial evidence.
