  • Notes
    • The 1820 census (recorded on 6 Nov 1820) lists his father "Jacob Snouffer" and his family by age: 2 males under 10 [John and Joseph David ?], 1 at 10-16 [William ?], and 1 at 26-45 [Jacob ?]; 1 female under 10 [Lydia Ann ?], 1 at 16-26 [??] and 1 at 26-45 [Elizabeth Arter]. The family also had one male slave, aged 14-26. 1820 U.S. Census, Emmitsburg, Frederick Cnty, MD (M 33, Roll 43, stamped p. 159).

The 1840 census lists John Snouffer as head of a household consisting of 1 male [Jerome Francis] under 5 yrs of age, 1 male [John] in the age range of 20-30, and 1 female [Sarah] in the age range of 30-40 [sic]. 1840 U.S. Census, 5th Dist, Frederick Cnty, MD (M 704, Roll 166, stamped p. 259).

Regarding John's wife's name, and his daughter Elmira, the PARISH RECORD BOOK #2, Liber Baptisatorum, 1843-1872, of St. Joseph's Parish, Emmitsburg, MD, contains the following entry:
"5. Anno Domini, 1843, diei 5, mensis Martii, Ego, Jacobus A Miller, Capellanus hujus Ecclesia Sancti Josephi in vico Emmettsburg [sic] baptizavi infantem die ??? mendis natam ex Joanne [sic] Snouffer et Sarah Anna Kunst conjugibus Catholicis cui impositum et nomen Elmira Agnes. Patrini fuerunt Augustinus Little et Lydia Anna Snouffer [John's sister]."

In J.A. Helman, HISTORY OF EMMITSBURG, MARYLAND, p. 62 (1906), John is listed as a member of the Emmitsburg fire company in 1840. For a comment about the fire company, see the Notes for John's father Jacob.

Concerning John's son Frank J. Snouffer, the HISTORY OF CASS COUNTY, IOWA, pp. 880-881 (Continental Historical Co., Springfield, IL: 1884), reports:
"Among those who are engaged in industrial pursuits in Atlantic [Iowa] is F. J. Snouffer.... *** Mr. F. J. Snouffer was born in Frederick county, Maryland ... his parents being John and Sarah Snouffer. In the year 1848 his parents removed [sic] to Montgomery county, Indiana, near Crawfordsville. *** "
    • The 1850 census shows "John Snaffer," a cooper, 36 years old and born in Maryland, living with his wife Sarah, 29, also born in Maryland, and four children: "Francis J" Snouffer, 13; "Wincent G.", 7; Mary L., 5; and Catherine A., 2. 1850 U.S. Census, Scott Twsp, Montgomery Cnty, IN (M 432, Roll 161, stamped p. 526).
    • (Research):
A John "Snoffer" served as a Private for a few months during the Civil War. John "Snoffer" is listed as a Private in Company E, Fifth Maryland Infantry Regiment, from 16 Mar 1865 through 1 Sep 1865. L.A.Wilmer, J.H.Jarrett, G.W.F.Vernon, HISTORY AND ROSTER OF MARYLAND VOLUNTEERS, WAR OF 1861-5, vol. 1, p. 201 (Guggenheimer, Weil & Co., Baltimore, MD: 1898).

According to the authors (Ibid, pp. 179-180):
"The Fifth Maryland Infantry Regiment was organized at Baltimore City, Maryland, in September, 1861, to serve three years. ***
"Company E was recruited in Frederick County and Baltimore City.... ***
"[T]he 5th Regiment marched with the army of the Potomac, and bore a conspicuous part in the battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862. *** [It was assigned to another Division during 1863.]
"The regiment rejoined the army of the Potomac in 1864, and participated in the siege of Petersburg, June to September, 1864.... ***
"The battles and engagements in which the 5th Regiment of Infantry participated were ... [numerous, and included the] occupation of Richmond, Va., April 3, 1865.
"The 5th Regiment of Infantry was mustered out of the military service of the United States at Fredericksburg, Va., September 1, 1865, and transported thence to Baltimore, Md., where the regiment disbanded."

Four John Snouffers are possible candidates:
      (1) This John Snouffer [i36], born 6 Oct 1811, a fire company member in Emmitsburg, MD, who would have been 54 years old in 1865. However this is unlikely; this John and his family moved to Indiana in 1848.
      (2) John Benjamin Snouffer [i284], born 5 Jan 1816, and still living in Maryland when he married his 3d wife in 1859, who would have been 49 years old in 1865; and
      (3) John Benjamin's twin brother Benjamin John [i285], born 5 Jan 1816, who also would have been 49 years old, but who probably was a southern sympathizer; and
      (4) John Boone Snouffer [i968], born 12 Oct 1852, who would have been only 13 years old in 1865.
