  • Notes
    • The 1820 census (recorded on 6 Nov 1820) lists his father "Jacob Snouffer" and his family by age: 2 males under 10 [John and Joseph David ?], 1 at 10-16 [William ?], and 1 at 26-45 [Jacob ?]; 1 female under 10 [Lydia Ann ?], 1 at 16-26 [??] and 1 at 26-45 [Elizabeth Arter]. The family also had one male slave, aged 14-26. 1820 U.S. Census, Emmitsburg, Frederick Cnty, MD (M 33, Roll 43, stamped p. 159).

The 1850 census reported that Joseph was 33 years old and that he was living with his parents Jacob, 66, and Elizabeth, 61, and his siblings Mary, 22, and William, 19. It further stated that Joseph was a carpenter. 1850 U.S. Census, Emmitsburg, Frederick Cnty, MD (M 432, Roll 292, stamped p. 167); M.F. Hitselberger & J.P. Dern, BRIDGE IN TIME, THE COMPLETE 1850 CENSUS OF FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND, p. 167 (Monocacy Book Co., Redwood City, CA: 1978).

In J.A. Helman, HISTORY OF EMMITSBURG, MARYLAND, p. 62 (1906), Joseph is listed as a member of the Emmitsburg fire company in 1840. For a comment about the fire company, see the Notes for Joseph's father Jacob. Helman also reported (ibid., p. 63) that Joseph was an Emmitsburg property owner between 1850 and 1860.

Joseph and his wife Mary E. must have married between 12 July 1850, when the census was taken, and 21 Mar 1852, when their daughter Josephine was born.

According to the Frederick, MD Examiner (10 Aug 1853), Mary died 28 July 1853 from cholera. See Mary F. Hitselberger, "Abstracts from the Examiner, Frederick Md., 6 July to 28 December 1853," vol. 19, Western Maryland Genealogy, p. 201 (Oct. 2003), which reads: "Snouffer, Mary E., wife Joseph Snouffer, in 24y, d. in Emmittsburg [sic], of Cholera, 28th July."

After Mary's death Joseph married Theresa White. Then, on 23 Nov 1863, he and Bethilda Hann obtained their marriage license and presumably were married shortly thereafter. See Margaret E. Myers, MARRIAGE LICENSES OF FREDERICK COUNTY [MD], 1841-1865, pp. 101, 218 (Family Line Publications, Westminster, MD: 1988).

D.J. Lake's ATLAS OF FREDERICK COUNTY MARYLAND, p. 65 (C.O. Titus & Co., Philadelphia, PA: 1873) contains a map showing a fairly large parcel of property owned by "J. Snouffer" near the center of town on the road leading to Gettysburg, PA.

The 1880 census lists "Joseph N. [sic] Snouffer" as a 62-yr old carpenter living with his wife Bethilda, son Philip, 14, and an adopted daughter Maria, 9. 1880 U.S. Census, Emmitsburg, Frederick Cnty, MD, (T 9, Roll 510, stamped p. 202).

Joseph Snouffer's will was probated 18 Mar 1891 and left to "Daughter Josephine now Mrs. Byers - $1,000; Son Philip J. -- personal property, late dwelling in Emmitsburg; Remainder equally to Philip J. Snouffer & Robert A. Haley. They are executors. Dated 18 Feb 1891." (Notes by Robert M. Hess, citing to Frederick County, MD, Will Book HL 1:354)

Robert Hess also noted in his report that when he visited the Emmitsburg Catholic Cemetery in 1966, he observed a tombstone showing the "Wives of Joseph Snouffer" that listed two names, Mary E. Snouffer, who died 28 July 1853, at age 23-4-4, and Theresa E. Snouffer, who died 31 Mar 1861, at age 28-0-4. A separate tombstone also shows Bethilda Hann, wife of Joseph Snouffer, who died 22 July 1889, at age 68-4-20. Robert M. Hess, "Snouffer Notes" (29 Apr 1975).
    • (Research):
The death date given in NAMES IN STONE is 9 Mar 1894; I assume that is a typographical error. Joseph's will was probated in 1891.
