  • Notes
    • According to her daughter Mary's obituary, in «i»The Denison [IA] Bulletin«/i» (12 Jul 1900), Lydia's husband Henry travelled from Maryland to Iowa in November, 1851, and she and her daughter Alice came to Muscatine, IA in June, 1852. In Dec. 1853 they moved to Crawford Cnty, IA.

The 1880 census gives her husband Henry's age as 56 and lists his occupation as a merchant; he was living with Lydia, 56, who was "keeping house;" son William, 25, a farmer; Kathleen, 21, "at home"; and Eli, 19, and Anna, 17, "at school"; no occupation was given for "Bell" [sic], 15, or Lillie,12. «i»1880 U.S. Census, «/i»Denison, Crawford Cnty, IA (T 9, Roll 335, stamped p. 98).

According to «i»BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF CRAWFORD, IDA & SAC COUNTIES, IOWA«/i», p. 246 (Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co.; 1893), Lydia's husband was born in Little York, Pennsylvania, April 18,1824, and "was married in Frederick County, Maryland, February 7, 1848, to Miss Lydia Baer, daughter of Jacob and Matilda Baer. She was born in Montgomery [sic; Carroll] County, Maryland, February 7, 1824. They had eight children: Alice M. ...; Mettie M. ...; William...; Catharine [Kathleen]...; Anna L....; Ely C. ...; Lydia B. ...; and Lillie...."

      Lydia's obituary, in «i»The Denison [IA] Review«/i» (2 Sep 1896), states:
«tab»"Mrs. Lydia Baer Laub was born in Carroll County, Maryland, on the 7th day of February, 1824, and died in the town of Onawa, Iowa, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Ainsworth, on the 29th day of August, 1896, at twenty minutes past one o'clock in the afternoon, seventy-two years, six months and twenty-two days old. Her ancestry was of the highest respectability. On the parental side she descended from a family [of] Marylanders, who served their country in the war of the Revolution, and in the war of 1812. On the 14th day of February 1848, ... [she] became the wife of Henry C. Laub, in Fredericks [sic] County, Maryland.... ***
«tab»"The fourth year after their marriage [1900] they went west to Muscatine, Iowa, in which city she was converted and joined the church. Three years later they came to Crawford County and lived here to the present period, forty-one years.... ***
«tab»"She was a fruitful vine, the mother of eight children; two sons and six daughters; one daughter is not, for God took her.
«tab»"All the living children are married and there are ten grand children. ***
«tab»"The body will now be borne ... to the cemetery on the hill where it will be laid to rest beside that of her beloved daughter, Lydia Belle....
«tab»"Mrs. H. C. Laub was a faithful wife and a loving mother. She devoted all her strength and thought to promote the welfare of her large family. She accepted pioneer life with its many privations with courage. ***"
    • (Research):There are at least 4 Bear males married in Frederick County in the 1830's who could have been fathers to Sarah and Lydia. See Margaret E. Myers, MARRIAGE LICENSES OF FREDERICK COUNTY, 1811-1840, p. 13 (1987).

«tab»The 1790 census for Frederick County, MD lists Jacob Bear, Sr, and Jacob Bear, Jr, as well as Geo. Bear, Jr, Henry Bear and William Bear. T.J.C.Williams & F.McKinsey, HISTORY OF FREDERICK COUNTY, pp. 638-639 (1910).
      «tab»
Also, see J.T.Scharf, HISTORY OF WESTERN MARYLAND, p. 474 (1882), reciting: "Feb. 17, 1848 -- Henry Bear, aged 91, the last of the Revolutionary survivors of Frederick County. He entered the army in 1776 as a volunteer. He was one of the company that marched from Frederick under the command of Capt. Peter Mantz, and which formed a part of the old Maryland line."
