"Amos Thomas was born on his father's farm, south of Adamstown. He was educated in the public schools of Frederick County, and remained with his father until after his marriage when he purchased one of his father's farms, and began farming for himself. In 1897, Mr. Thomas sold his farm and removed to Doubs, where he engaged in milling. In 1900 he was appointed inspector of stone for the District government of Washingon, D.C. He and his family removed to Washington in 1909, and he removed to Dickerson, Montgomery County, Md. ... Amos Thomas was married to Hattie H. [sic], daughter of George Snouffer. Of their nine children, six reached maturity.... *** Mr. Thomas and his wife are members of the Reformed Church in Adamstown, Md."

The 1880 census shows Amos Thomas, 33, a farmer, living with his wife "Hatte E," 32, and 5 children: George L, 10; Lottie, 8; Mildred, 5; Nellie L, 3; and Amos, 1. Also in the home was John Willis, a black servant. Living next to him was his father-in-law "Snauffer, George W," a 56 year old widowed farmer, and his two single daughters Nellie and Fannie, married daughter Ida and her husband John H. Yakey [indexed as "Yukey"], a cousin, a black servant and 3 black farm laborers. 1880 U.S. Census, Buckeystown Dist, Frederick Cnty, MD (T 9, Roll 509, stamped p. 5).
