    • Obituary, «i»Greensboro [NC] News & Record«/i» (22 Jun 2005), states:

«tab»"In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Chase and Avery Setzer College Fund ... Greensboro, N.C." (See: «u»«/u» [accessed 2 Jul 2005].)

A somewhat different impression is conveyed in an earlier newspaper article. The «i»Greensboro [NC] News & Record«/i», p. B1 (20 Jun 2005), reported:
«tab»"A man found dead on his living room floor Sunday [19 June] was a homicide victim, police said. Police suspect the killer might have been a man who later apparently turned a gun on himself. "That's a possibility we're exploring," Greensboro police Capt. G. W. Hastings said.
«tab»"Police responded to 3116 N. Church St., about 8:20 a.m. and discovered William Jared Setzer dead. Setzer's mother had called 911 after seeing his body, police said.
«tab»"[Capt.] Hastings said Setzer was familiar with another man, also 23, who was found dead about a mile from the site of the apparent homicide. The man, whose name was not released, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
«tab»"Hastings said the men had spoken by telephone on Saturday. "What we do know is they were acquaintances," he said.
«tab»"Setzer's death was Greensboro's 10th homicide this year. Witnesses told police a pickup was seen leaving Setzer's house about 3 a.m. Sunday. An hour later, police responded to a separate report of a shooting at 3830 Wind Lake Drive. There, they found the other dead man....
«tab»"Setzer received minor lacerations on Saturday [18 June], during a robbery near his house. Those injuries did not require hospital treatment; police said they don't believe the robbery and homicide were connected.
«tab»"One of Setzer's neighbors ... said he saw Setzer involved in a dispute Saturday evening with a group of teenagers. Setzer took off running ... and "blood was coming out the side of him."
«tab»"In addition, police said Setzer was charged with larceny on Saturday in connection with an [earlier] incident at a nearby restaurant."

A television news clip adds a few more details:
«tab»"Greensboro police are trying to figure out exactly who killed a man and why another man killed himself. Sunday morning [19 June], a woman found her son, William Jared Setzer, in pretty bad shape. She called emergency crews to the home on Church Street saying he was in cardiac arrest. When officers got to the home they found Setzer dead. They aren't saying how he died, but they are saying it's a homicide.... Around 4 am Sunday, police went to a home on Wind Lake Drive. There they found a man dead from a gushot wound. Detectives say they know the two men knew each other and some witnesses have reported seeing a car leaving the house on Church Street early this morning...." (See: «u»«/u» [accessed 27 Jul 2005].)

The following article appeared in the Greensboro, NC, «i»News Record «/i»(5 Aug 2005):

      «b»Few Snouffers in 'Snouffer Town'
      «i»By Jim Schlosser«/b»
      Staff Writer

«/i»GREENSBORO -- When students gathered to board school buses at old Jesse Wharton School on Pisgah Church Road, a driver would holler "Snouffer Town Bus now loading."

Nearly all the children who jumped aboard were named Snouffer.

They lived in what was called "Snouffer Town," a stretch of North Church Street between Charles Street and Denny Road. It was stocked with Snouffers from the 1940s through the 1980s, when numbers began declining. A house fire on July 25 [2005] drove two more Snouffers away, leaving only two. ***

The house now stands charred. The recent fire that started in a window air-conditioning unit drove Rita Dickson and her son, Charles, from the house. They now live in an apartment elsewhere.

Their departure leaves only Sonji Snouffer Setzer and her mother, Helen Snouffer, in what used to be called Snouffer Town. ***

Maybe it's for the best. Even though the family can count many successful members, others have been haunted by tragedy and trouble, with the fire the latest incident. ***

This year, on June 19 [2005], Jared Setzer, 23, Sonji Snouffer Setzer's son, was shot dead at his home on Church Street after an altercation concerning a woman. The killer later committed suicide. ***
