  • Notes
    • The 1900 census reports Frank, 18 yrs old, born in Maryland in Mar 1882, working as a stone mason, and living with his parents Richard and Carrie and 6 siblings. William's occupation is listed as a "day laborer." 1900 U.S. Census, 12th Ward, Baltimore, Baltimore Cnty, MD (T 623, Roll 612, stamped p. 287).

According to his World War I draft registration, dated 12 Sep 1918, Benjamin listed his occupation as a "Brakeman" for the "B[altimore] & O[hio] R.R. Co." Further, it listed his wife as "Celia Katherine Snouffer." Also, it categorized his height as "short", with a "slender" build, blue eyes and black hair.

The 1920 census lists Benjamin, 37, living with his wife Cecelia C, 27, and children Robert, 7, Dorothy, 4, and Mildred, 1 & 1/2, together with a niece Margaret Jameson [Jennison?], 16. 1920 U.S. Census, 12th Ward, Baltimore, Baltimore Cnty, MD (T 625, Roll 658, stamped p. 156).

Barbara Allshouse reports that the 1920 Baltimore City Directory lists "Snouffer Benj F lab[orer] h 2630 Bernard" and it lists "Snouffer Frank lab[orer]" living at the same address [probably a double entry]. She reports that the 1921 directory gives the same entry for Benjamin F, but does not list Frank. Then in 1922, the directory shows: "Snouffer Benj (Celia) driver h 2617 Bernard."

The 1930 census lists Benjamin "Snoffer" as a 48 year old man living with his wife "Cecil" [it's quite hard to read], 38, and children Robert, 17 and Dorothy, 14. He was self-employed as a "tree trimmer." He lived next door to his brother John. 1930 U.S. Census, 12th Ward, Baltimore, Baltimore County, MD (T 626, Roll 856, stamped p. 70).

At the time of the 1940 census he lived with his brother, George M. Snouffer. 1940 U.S. Census, Hamtown, Guilford Cnty, NC (T 627, Roll 2920, stamped p. 990 B).

Robyn Clawson wrote in a Jan. 2004 Email that: "Gertrude "Sissy" Snouffer Hoover spoke with me recently and mentioned her father (Benjamin) was a bit like the character portrayed in Roger Miller's song, "King of the Road." He would hit the road for work and return days or weeks later...."

According to the Social Security Death Index, Benjamin (SSN 212-16-0852; issued in Maryland) was born 24 Mar 1882 and died in Jan 1963 while residing in Maryland. However, records at the Gardens of Faith Cemetery indicate that he died in 1962. His headstone also displays 1962. (Note that the headstone photograph is of poor quality because the headstone is in a wet and muddy area and cannot be cleaned properly.)
