  • Notes
    • The 1880 census lists John as an 11 year old boy living with his father "Snoffer, F. David," mother Altha, and brother Orris. 1880 U.S. Census, Perry Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 9, Roll 1015, stamped p. 169)[LDS Film 1255015].

The 1900 census shows John Snouffer, 31, living with his wife of 8 years Clara M, 28, and son Lawrence, 7. John was a farmer. 1900 U.S. Census, Perry Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 623, Roll 1270, stamped p. 189B).

According to the 1910 census, "Jno. M." Snouffer was a 41-yr old man, married 19 years to his wife Clara, 35, living with her and their son Lawrence, 17. John's occupation is listed as a contractor, involved in roadwork. 1910 U.S. Census, 12th Ward, Columbus, Franklin Cnty, OH (T624, Roll 1183, stamped p. 163).

The 1920 census lists John M Snouffer, 51, living with his wife Clara M, 48, and their son Lawrence, 27, his wife Lillian E., 24, and their daughter Martha R, 1 & 9/12 years. 1920 U.S. Census, Columbus, Ward 16, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 625, Roll 1383, stamped p. 312B).

The 1930 census shows John M. Snouffer, 56, living with his second wife "Joslyn K," 39, and her daughter Marjorie J. Steele, 14. John worked as a road construction contractor. 1930 U.S. Census, Sharon Twsp, Franklin Cnty, OH (T 626, Roll 1802, ED 220, p. 2A).

According to John's second cousin, twice removed, Edward Stanley Snouffer, DDS, John and his son Lawrence "owned the stone quarry on Rt. 33, south of Dublin, OH, along the East bank of the Scioto River. There are large, expensive, one of a kind homes there now." (Email to Wm.C.Snouffer, 18 Dec 2002). In fact, the 1947 Columbus City Directory has an advertizement on p. 1346 for "J. & L. Snouffer Inc.," sellers of "crushed limestone" and builders of "agricultural lime driveways." The company's address was 5899 Riverside Dr, Dublin OH. 1947 Columbus City Directory, p. 1346 (R. L. Polk Co.: 1947). And, finally, John's Ohio Death Certificate # 42836 indicates that he was the "owner of J. L. Snouffer stone quarry co."

According to the Ohio Supreme Court, John was divorced from his first wife Clara on 10 July 1925, and he died 1 July 1935. Sometime in between he married a second wife, Joslyn. She was named the executrix of his will. In the original divorce decree, John was required to transfer to Clara a portion of his farm property and a residence, and he was required to pay off the mortgage on the residence. Further, he was required to pay Clara $200 per month alimony as long as she remained unmarried (this was reduced to $100 per month on appeal). When he died in July, 1935, his second wife Joslyn promptly quit making the alimony payments. Clara sued. A lower court ruled in her favor, holding that the estate was required to continue the alimony payments. The Supreme Court reversed, holding that monthly alimony was a personal obligation that terminates upon death. See, Snouffer v. Snouffer, vol. 132, Ohio Reports, p. 617; vol. 9, NorthEastern Reports 2d, p. 621 (1937).
