    • The 1900 census lists John Helmer 71, born Feb 1829 in Germany, and who immigrated to the U.S. in 1849, living with his wife of 40 years, "Joanna," 64, born Jul 1835 [sic] in Maryland, and 1 son, William J. Helmer, 38, born in Pennsylvania. Also living with them were 2 nephews and a niece all surnamed Burghduff. John was a farmer, his son a "farm laborer." 1900 U.S. Census, Center Twsp, Cedar Cnty, IA (T 623, Roll 422, stamped p. 17). They lived about 6 homesteads away from their daughter "Meda," her husband Henry M. Hanna, and grandson William M Hanna. 1900 U.S. Census, Center Twsp, Cedar Cnty, IA (T 623, Roll 422, stamped p. 16 B).
    • The 1880 census lists her father John as a 73 year old farmer, born in England, living with his wife "Anna," 67, and grandchildren Harry, Hannah and Nellie Blowers. Johanna, 39, lived next door to her parents, with her husband John Helmer, 50, and their children, William J, 18; and Hannah A, 15. 1880 U.S. Census, Center [sic] Twsp, Cedar Cnty, IA (T 9, Roll 331, stamped p. 109).
    • Obituary, Cedar Rapids Gazette [?] (29 Mar 1932):
      "Mrs. Johanna Helmer, 90, widow of J.M. Helmer of Tipton [IA], died at a local hospital at 4:45 p.m. yesterday [28 Mar]. She had been in ill health for some time and was brought here to the hospital Sunday [27 Mar]. Mrs. Helmer had been a resident of Tipton for many years and is survived by a daughter, Mrs. H.M. Hanna, Cedar Rapids; a son, William Helmer, of Bennett; two grandchildren, John and William Hanna, Cedar Rapids, and a sister, Mrs. Ellen Newens, of Cedar Rapids.
      "Funeral services will be held in her home at Tipton at 2 p.m., Wednesday [30 Mar] with burial in the Masonic cemetery at Tipton."
