  • Notes
    • The Montgomery County [MD] Sentinel, p. 3 (6 Apr 1894), reported that "There was a dance at the Town Hall in Poolesville on the 28th.... Among those present were *** Henry Chiswell, Benjamin Chiswell, ***." John D. Bowman, Guide to Selections from the Montgomery County [MD] Sentinel, 1893-1896, p. 61 (2007).

According to the Sentinel, p. 3 (28 Sep 1894), "A dance was given on Friday [21 Sep] by the young gentlemen of the neighborhood [Poolesville]. Among those present were ... Miss Snouffer, *** McGill Belt, ... Henry Chiswell, ...." Bowman, Guide ... 1893-1896, p. 87 (2007). The Sentinel reported, p. 3 (5 Jul 1895), that "In the Dawsonville news: There was a dance on Jun 21st, in the new barn of Arthur Williams. Among those present were *** Henry Chiswell, ... 'and many others'." Bowman, Guide ... 1893-1896, pp. 123-124.

The 1900 census lists Henry Chiswell, 30, born Mar 1870 in Maryland, living in Washington, D.C., with his brothers "Benj," 25, born Dec 1874 in Maryland, and "Wallace," 27, born Oct 1872 in Maryland. Living with them, perhaps in an apartment building, were 2 employees and 15 "roomers." Henry's occupation appears to have been "Creamery Prop[rietor]"; Benjamin was a "Clerk Express"; and Wallace was a "Supt Ins". 1930 U.S. Census, Washington, D.C. (T 623, Roll 161, stamped p. 220B).

The 1900 census information is contradicted by the dates on Henry's tombstone, in the Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, D.C., on an obelisk listing his parents and his wife. Those dates indicate a birth on 4 Aug 1867 and a death on 22 Oct 1918.

An obituary for his wife in The Frederick [MD] Post, p. 5 (31 Aug 1955), states:
"Mrs. Rose F. Chiswell, 85, a lifetime resident of Montgomery County, died Sunday [28 Aug] at Doctor's Hospital.
"She was the widow of Henry Ball Chiswell, who was associated with the Peoples Life Insurance Co. for many years.
"She is surived by a son, William Forest Chiswell, a grandson, William Wallace Chiswell 2d, both of Portsmouth, Va., and a brother, John S. Snouffer, of Washington.
"Mrs. Chiswell, the former Rose Snouffer, lived for many years on the Snouffer family farm, Turkey Run, near Gaithersburg.
"Funeral services were held Tuesday [30 Aug].... Burial was in Rock Creek Cemetery."
