    • The will of his father-in-law Joseph D. Snouffer was probated 18 Mar 1891 and left to "Daughter Josephine now Mrs. Byers - $1,000; Son Philip J. - personal property, late dwelling in Emmitsburg; Remainder equally to Philip J. Snouffer & Robert A. Haley. They are executors. Dated 18 Feb 1891." (Notes by Robert M. Hess, citing to Frederick County, MD, Will Book HL, v.1, p.354.)

      The 1880 census shows Levi Byers, 33, living with his wife "Josephene," 26, and daughter "Mary M," 5 months. Levi was employed as a carpenter. «i»1880 U.S. Census, «/i»Dist. 60, Oxford, Adams Cnty, PA (T 9, Roll 1085, stamped p. 303D).

      The 1900 census lists Levi E Byers, 52, born Jul 1847 in Pennsylvania, living with his wife of 28 years, Josephine, 48, born Mar 1852 in Maryland, and the following Pennsylvnia-born children: Mamie M, 18, born Jan 1882 [sic]; Bessie C, 12, born Sept 1887 [sic]; Francis and Lawrence, 12, born Jan 1888; and Phillip, 5, born Feb 1895. The census records that Levi & Josephine had had 10 children, 6 of whom were still living. Levi's parents were born in Germany; he was a farmer. «i»1900 U.S. Census, «/i»Mt.       After the death of his wife, Levi lived with his daughter Bessie and her family. «i»1920 U.S. Census, «/i»Oxford Twsp, Adams Cnty, PA (T 625, Roll 1507, stamped p. 25B).

      The New Oxford Cemetery records report, under the name "Byers, Levi," that he "d. June 14, 1925 Age 77-10-25." Handwriting on the card adds: "Joseph E Byers Died 1917 | Cletus Laughman Died 1932 No Marker | Frank Byers Died 1960."

      «tab»"Levi Byers died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Withers, Oxford township, near Irishtown [PA], with whom he resided, yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. He was aged 77 years, ten months and 25 days. Death was due to a complication of diseases. The parents of the deceased were the late John and Catherine Byers. His wife preceded him in death. Surviving are one daughter and four sons, as follows: Charles Byers, Bittingers; Mrs. W. A. Withers, Oxford township, near Irishtown; Frank and Lawrence Byers, New Oxford; and Philip Byers, Middletown, Pa. A brother, Alexander Byers, New Oxford, and 20 grandchildren also survived. The funeral will be held on Wednesday morning ... New Oxford cemetery."

      According to notes by Gerviase Dynes-Wolak, posted at «u»www.FindAGrave.com«/u» : "The oldest son of John and Catherine Byers, who immigrated from Bavaria, Levi was born in Adams County, PA where the family settled. On August 15, 1871, he married Josephine Snouffer and settled in New Oxford to raise their family. Josephine was the daughter of Joseph David and Theresa Elizabeth (White) Snouffer of Emmitsburg, MD. Levi and Josephine had 10 children, but only six lived to adults: Mary Mamie (Lookenbill), Charles Henry, Bessie C. (Withers), twins Francis B and Levi Lawrence, and Philip M." (accessed June 2008)
