  • Notes
    • In an Email letter (14 Feb 2000), his wife Carol Jewell wrote:
"In regards to Jewell [family history] -- I have had little to no success ... for several reasons.
"We are very much aware that the [genealogy] line of Chuck's father is dramatically ruined. His father was [illegitimate]. His birthmother died within the first year of his life. He lived with his mother's family. When he was less than 5 years of age, the father [returned from WW II and] made is presence known. This man, with the Jewell last name, had been in military service (which we have no data on, nor can we confirm the first name) [and] returned to the area where the mother was living when he shipped-out.
"It seems that he and the mother were to marry but he was unaware she was pregnant when he went to war. It seems that after he returned for young Charles, he learned of the death of the mother. He convinced [Charles' mother's] family to let him take the child. Where he went or what happened is unknown, but Charles was put in an orphanage somewhere in Illinois and was adopted by unknowns with the last name of Wright.
"When Charles was about 16 or 17, he ran away from the home of his adoptive parents. Somehow he located his natural father and just took back the name Jewell.
"We were located [recently] by a cousin of Charles who hoped that he had finally found my husband's father. From this man we learned that my husband's grandmother (deceased) was a Basquini. This was her last name and her parents were inter-racial. Her grandmother was a French Canadian Indian and her grandfather was believed to be a US citizen. This living relative (he is in his mid-80's) had only recently learned that he and my husband's father were not brothers because this man's mother was the woman who raised Charles until [Charles'] father came back into the picture......"
    • The "Minnesota, Marriage Collection, 1858-2991," accessible through www.Ancestry.com, online database at http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=8721, lists a marriage of Charles F. Jewell, 32, born about 1941, to Carol J. Schlampp, in the State of Minnesota. Page D14 of that record shows the "Groom Index 1870 Thru 1975" and lists: "Jewell Charles F, 32, Schlampp, Carol J. 33, Hennpn 03-01073."
    • According to Carol's sister Phyllis, after Carol died in Feb 2015, Charles moved back to Iowa to live with his two daughters.
