  • Notes
    • Richard Snouffer was a 1952 graduate of Capital University, Columbus, OH. In 2001 he was inducted in their Alumni Varsity "C" Athletic Hall-of-Fame. A press release regarding that honor noted that "Richard Snouffer was a member of the men's basketball team from 1949 to 1952. A starter from 1950-52, he served as the team's co-captain and was known as the team's defensive specialist, but also put up his share of offensive numbers, twice leading the team in scoring."

      The Press-Gazette [Hillsboro, OH], p. 5 (13 May 1958), reported:
"Circleville -- Richard Boyd, popular head basketball coach at Circleville High School, has resigned ....
"Richard Kendall Snouffer, 27, has been hired as head basketball coach to replace Boyd.
"Snouffer, former cage coach at Johnstown, Licking County, is a graduate of Capital University where he starred in basketball. He was a teammate of Boyd at Capital.
"Snouffer brings a fine 48-16 record as a coach to Circleville."

On 15 March 2001, Richard "received the seventh annual Nancy Frankenberg Award,...whose accomplishments included founding the local United Way. Snouffer is a former principal of Delaware Hayes High School and retired executive director of the Delaware Chapter, American Red Cross. See http://www.uwaydelaware.org/honorsawards.htm

In late 2001 the Delaware County, OH, Council for Older Adults, noted that Richard was the principal at Hayes High School and served there for 16 years. He was the local director of the American Red Cross, also for 16 years. And he served many years on the board of the Central Ohio Mental Health Center. The Council stated, further:
"Delaware's Dick Snouffer is a lot like Jimmy Stewart in the movie, "It's A Wonderful Life": He's touched more people than he can imagine, and his community wouldn't be the same compassionate place without him. In 35 years of service, Snouffer has improved people's lives by education, emergency services, and care in the areas of mental health and substance abuse. Recently, hundreds of people -- community leaders, school teachers, ministers and others -- attended a tribute to thank him. 'When someone asks me about Dick Snouffer, I tell them he has only one fault: his heart is too big,' says Debbie Martin, Delaware County commissioner. 'If you ever need help, call Dick. He has led a life of service, and he is an integral part of our community.' " See http://www.coaging.org.ccnov01/snouffer.htm

Named after him, the Central Ohio Mental Health Center -- Snouffer Center -- located in Delaware, OH, offers general outpatient counseling for couples and family, crisis intervention, consultation and education, as well as services for mentally disabled adults.
