  • Notes
    • In 1830 three sons of Johann Friederich Schnauffer applied to local authorities to emigrate to North America. They were: Johann Friederich ("Fred"), Johann Marx, and Johannes ("John"). They went to the "Auswanderung" [emigration] office for Malmsheim, Leonberg Oberamt [district town] , Wurttemberg to apply.

On 19 Mar 1830, in application No. 11, "Joh. Marx Schnaufer, burger und Weber" [citizen and weaver], together with his wife "Christina Barbara Geborhen [born] Kraemer" applied for permission to travel to "Nord America." Their "kinder" [children] were listed:

      "A. Elizabetha Barbara ---------- 19
      "B. Jonathan ----------- 14
      "C. Gottlob Friederick -------- 11
      "D. Johannes -------- 9
      "E. Christina Maria -------- 5
      "F. Regina Catharina -------- 3 *** "

The applications of the three brothers are contained in the Leonberg Oberamt (Wurttemberg) Auswanderungsakten, 1589-1918, the original manuscripts of which are in the Staatsarchiv, Ludwigsburg. They are preserved on microfilm (LDS Film 837958).

The records are indexed (but not arranged by family) in Trudy Schenk & Ruth Froelke, The Wuertemberg Emigration Index, vol. 4, pp. 185-186 (Ancestry Publishing; Salt Lake City, UT: 1988).

A short while later the three families travelled to Rotterdam, Holland, to begin their voyage to "Nord America." They boarded the Fabius, sailed the Atlantic, and arrived in Baltimore, MD on 30 Sep 1830. All members of the families survived the voyage except for Johannes' (John's) baby daughter Anna Barbara. Arrival of the new immigrants was duly noted by customs officials; in the process of recording names of the arriving passengers, some were "Americanized." Regardless, the names of the new immigrants are indexed (but, again, not arranged by family) in Michael H.Tepper (ed.), Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Baltimore, 1820-1834, pp. 634-635 (Genealogical Pub. Co.; Baltimore, MD: 1982).
    • The 1840 census shows "Marcus Schnauffer" in his family of 6: the parents plus 4 others, presumably children. The male parent [Marcus, who was 56] is in the 50-59 age male column; the female parent [Christina was 51] is in the 50-59 female column. There are 2 boys: 1 is aged 5-9 ; the other 20-29. There are two girls: 1 is aged 5-9; the other 10-14. 1840 U.S. Census, Fayette Twsp, Juniata Cnty, PA (M 704; Roll 464, stamped p. 231).
    • In 1850 the census lists "Max Snouffer," 66, living with 2 females: "J Snouffer," 62, and "F Snouffer," 15. Max/Marcus was employed as a laborer. 1850 U.S. Census, Walker Twsp, Juniata Cnty, PA (M 432, Roll 786, stamped p. 243).
