  • Notes
    • J.T.Scharf, HISTORY OF WESTERN MARYLAND, p. 951 (1882), reports:
"J. Henry Hoppe was born near Bowers' church, now called Bachman's, in Bachman's Valley, Feb. 17, 1801. His father was Ferdinand Frederick Hoppe and was born in Stuttgart, Germany. His mother was Catharine Snouffer, of Frederick County. Mr. Hoppe received a common-school education, after which he taught school for five years, studying surveying in the meanwhile, in which he became very proficient. On attaining his majority he united with the Democratic party....
"In 1825 he was appointed a magistrate, and, with the exception of a few years, he held the position until twelve months before his death. [See, ibid, pp. 808-809] He became so thoroughly versed in testamentary law that he was frequently appointed to settle the estates of deceased persons, several of which were very large. In 1842 he was elected sheriff of this county [a post he held for only 3 years; ibid, p. 806]....
"Mr. Hoppe was a charter member of the Western Maryland Railroad, was elected secretary and treasurer, and was also a director in the road. He was for a number of years director of the Union National Bank of Westminster [e.g., ibid, p. 942], and was also a charter member of George Washington Lodge, A.F.A.M., of that city. He was elected county surveyor for four counsecutive terms. Mr. Hoppe always resided in Carroll County, though the place of his birth was then in Baltimore County.... Squire Hoppe was a member of the Lutheran Church for over sixty years. No man in Carroll County was more generally or more favorably known. He died Jan. 5, 1881, after an active and busy career of nearly eighty years."
    • Hoppe was involved in creating Carroll County out of Baltimore & Frederick counties. (See, ibid, p. 794.) He also was on the first board of directors of the Westminster Cemetery Corporation when it was incorporated 17 June 1864. (Ibid, p. 937.) But he is not listed as being buried there. In 1876, during festivities celebrating the Centenary of American Independence, he among others was an "Honorary President" of the celebration. (Ibid, p. 955.)
    • John is buried in Krider's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Westminster, MD, in sec. B, row 12, lot 24. See vol. 5, part 1, CARROLL COUNTY CEMETERIES, p. 98 (Carroll Cnty Genealogical Soc'y, 1999).
